I think this is very good news. I suggested Syd hire a special assistant a couple of weeks ago to bring some real coaching experience to his resume thin bench. I just felt that Syd lacked a real X and Os guys with alot of years under his belt. Carmody has a great resume and did good things at Northwestern in a very difficult B1G situation. Plus it shows that Syd is willing to be honest with himself that things are not working and that he needs help. I don't expect a miracle from this, but, Welcome Coach Carmody!

Bill Carmody, who led Princeton to a pair of NCAA and NIT tournament appearances and coached Northwestern to four postseason berths, will be named as a special assistant to the Fairfield men's basketball program, Hearst Connecticut Media has learned.
"This is going to happen this week," Stags head coach Sydney Johnson confirmed Monday. "He was the runner-up for National Coach of the year in 1998, he was Big Ten Coach of the Year (2004) and he's been wanting to get back into coaching, so I spoke to him about working with us."
In his four seasons at Princeton, Carmody went 92-25, leading the Tigers to NCAA trips in 1997 and 1998, the first being Johnson's senior year, before going to the NIT the next two years. That success led to the head job at Northwestern, where in 13 seasons (2000-13), Carmody posted a192-220 mark, taking the Wildcats to four NIT appearances.
"He's clearly got more experience than me, but I've been able to bounce things off him. He just knows a lot and sees a lot and I really like that," Johnson said. "He really sees a lot. His vision, just offensively and defensively, he notices the details and I think that's tremendously important. And then he has a world of experience. Just a world of experience. So, when I'm sounding things off to him or he's sounding things off to me, it's a two-way street." ....
A welcome addition. To me his major benefit will be to evaluate the situation and make recommendations. I am sure it will be sweeping recommendations on the Coach, Assistants and Player.... along with scheme. Carmody is certainly a big enough name

This just solidifies what most of us have been saying from our observations of this team. Sydney does not have a clue of how screwed up this team is from a coaching and talent evaluating perspective.

Well, I'm going to take this as a positive. It can't hurt to get the opinions, thoughts and suggestions of a coach with this level of experience. However, I wonder, how we can afford this move. If we can pay for another coach, seems we have the resources to put some sort of buy out together.

My guess would be that Syd is paying him personally.

Paint me as a pessimist but I have a huge problem with this hire if Sydney is not paying for this. $400K a year and he needs to hire another coach to figure out what is wrong with this team?
