Regarding Quinnipiac here are some facts about their rich basketball history:
All-time losing division 1 record of 202-210 Number of NCAA tournament appearances: 0 NIT appearances: 1 20 Win Seasons: 2 20 Loss Seasons 4 Record versus other Connecticut powerhouse schools vs Central Connecticut 21-50 vs Sacred Heart 23-39 (How about adding central or SHU to the Maac?) Record versus Big East: 0 for forever. The Big Q has never beaten a big east team ( We complain about how poor Fairfield does versus the Big East. Fairfield has actually beaten big east teams occassionally including BC, UConn, Georgetown and St. Johns). Record versus Maac and former maac teams
Rider 0 -2 Siena 0 -2 Fairfield 0 - 1 (actually 0-2 Fairfield defeated quinnipiac in a JV game) Fordham 0-2 Niagara 2-0 Holy Cross 0-2 LaSalle 0-1 Loyola 1-0

Yeah, just so underwhelmed with this. I get that their facilities are nice but are we really pinning our hopes in a new era with Sacred Heart and Quinny as our rivals? Yawn. I think we had a better rivalry with Loyola...a game I will miss watching and attending every year.
How exactly is the Patriot League bad for us again? Does anyone think that we are on the radar for this proposed Catholic League, the A-10, CAA, etc. I have looked on the blogs and on reports and we are NOWHERE To be seen.
BTW, I had to laugh at the poster Maynard's Reef (which isn't Chris Maynard as that is me) who said that the MAAC should add Housatonic, Bridgeport, SCSU, and New Haven. That was what I was thinking ironically enough. Pretty funny.
Hope the people at FU feel better about this then I and some others do. Maybe this turns out to be good but nobody outside CT and NJ will notice or care.
All old news and stats. You have to get current with the info. Quinnipiac is one of the fastest growing programs in Division I and have been to 3 straight post season bearths. They also are 3-1 vs the MAAC in the modern era. However, if you want to pick programs by their Rich Tradition from the Stone Age, then St Peters has the richest tradition in the MAAC.
- They invest Big Time in a coach ..... like us - They invest Big Time in Facilities .... like us - They have gone to post season 3 years in a row .... like us - They would be one of the top Academic schools in the MAAC .... like us - They have dominated in CT-6 triple headers...... like us (QU is 3-1 and FU is 4-0) - They have dominated other CT schools in last 4 years ..... like us (QU is 17-3, we are 6-0)

Every team as 2 or 3 year periods where they are good. Even if we accept that Quinnipiac has improved, they have never once made the NCAA tournament coming out of the NEC. Rider on the other hand dominated the NEC in their final years and made the NCAA tourney three times but they have yet to win the Maac championship in 11 tries. Being a dominent NEC team isn't saying much and unfortunately Quinnipiac can not even say that.
Not many mid majors go to 3 straight Post Seasons. Bottom line is that Quinnipiac is like picking a stock on the way up. Big difference between Rider having a few good years, and having a good program like Quinnipiac. St Peters has gone to the NCAA once in the last 2 years, we have not gone to the NCAA in 15 years...... I guess St Peters has a better program than us.

Rider was actually a top NEC that won the NEC tournament three times. Quinnipiac has never won the NEC. Still, I really see little difference between Quinnipiac and Rider coming into the Maac. In the past not many teams went to three straight post seasons. But with an expanded NIT, CIT and CBI tournament many many colleges went to the post season the last three years. Rider didn't go three straight seasons but went three out of 4 years. Prior to those new tournaments Rider had never made a postseason tournament since joining the Maac, and never appeared in the NIT. Is Rider a program anyone would consider a top program? Is it better than it was or are they just eligible for new tournaments? The last 2 NEC teams to join the Maac have never made an NCAA appearance as Maac members. Only one existing school Canisius has failed to make an appearance during that time period:
Two NEC teams join the Maac (Rider and Marist)
Number of NCAA tournament appearance by team since Rider and Marist entered the Maac.
The addition of Rider and Marist did not strengthen the maac and the addition of any other NEC schools will yield the same results. Overall the conference is just becoming weaker and I can't see how this can be viewed as a good thing. No one as yet to articulate the beneifts of Quinnipiac joining the Maac to fairfield. Will the Maac get a better tv contract? Will Fairfield's program be elevated in any way? Will the school make more money? Will it improve our academic standing? For those in favor, please let me know what you think the benefits might be other than attendence at one game.
RF, I think everone has already stated all the benefits of Quinnipiac, your just not listening. Have an open mind..... you love it when we have those 2,800 fans at Qunnipiac and 3,500 fans at the Bank for a Fairfield-Quinnipiac game.

JS - I guess the only beneift I have seen or see is possibly getting increased attendence at one game. I think the downsides are many and the upsides are almost non existant.
I love all you do for this board and I am almost sorry that you and I see so much of this so differently. I wish I could embrace this I just think it is very bad for Fairfield.
When will there be official word? I still haven't seen anything official on the vote.

While Monmouth has already released a statement announcing its decision Quinnipiac will make its announcement on Saturday according to Mike Anthony of the Hartford Courant.....
As for Quinnipiac they become the MAAC’s second member located in Connecticut, as its Hamden campus is just over a half-hour drive from Fairfield. But there’s isn’t much basketball history between the schools as they’ve met just once, a 72-60 Fairfield win in the season opener for both last year (part of the Connecticut 6 Classic).....
"We are delighted to be joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference that will continue to advance us both athletically and academically," Quinnipiac University President John L. Lahey said in a statement. "We also want to thank the Northeast Conference which has provided collegiality and support to Quinnipiac's athletic teams since our becoming a Division I program......"
Quinnipiac, a private school in Hamden with an undergraduate enrollment of 6,262, will be a natural geographic rival for Fairfield while losing its in-state rivalries with NEC members Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut. It has one of the finest multi-purpose athletic facilities in the New England region with the $52 million TD Bank Sports Center.

All-time losing division 1 record of 202-210 Number of NCAA tournament appearances: 0 NIT appearances: 1 20 Win Seasons: 2 20 Loss Seasons 4 Record versus other Connecticut powerhouse schools vs Central Connecticut 21-50 vs Sacred Heart 23-39 (How about adding central or SHU to the Maac?) Wait a minute. The last time we beat UCONN was 1982, I think that was pre Big East. BC, Big East team? That goes back some years too. I don't ever remember a win against G'Town but we did beat the Johnnies a few years back at their on campus court.
That aside, Quinnipiac seems to be growing and they are close which is a consideration. This with SHU and Central may turn into an inner state rivalry like the western New York Little Three.
