Since there are no game notes on the Fairfield site yet, I thought I'd post something for folks to read in advance of tomorrow's game. Today's edition of game notes contains mostly MAAC and player stats, but as always in an attempt to keep things light a humorous slant might be portrayed in one of the sections.
SCOUTING THE STAGS:
The Stags enter action with a chance to match their longest winning streak of the season. Fairfield’s current winning streak is the 163rd longest such streak in the country and fourth longest in MAAC play. The Stags most recent winning streak of one or more games came on January 16th after beating 11th place Marist. The win earlier this week brought to a close the second longest losing streak in school history at 10 games.
CURRENT MAAC WIN STREAKS
Iona 10
Niagara 3
Manhattan 3
Fairfield 1
NOT SINCE 2012-2013 SEASON
With a sweep in Buffalo the Stags could put together their longest winning streak since the 2012 season.
NOT THAT CLOSE
The recent win versus St. Peters brought to a close the second longest losing streak in Fairfield history. It also ended Sydney Johnson chance, at least for now, to pursue the NCAA record for consecutive defeats. Currently that record belongs to Towson, a program that lost 41 consecutive games from Jan 3, 2011 to January 25, 2012
LONGEST LOSING STREAKS IN FAIRFIELD HISTORY
Buonguoro 11 1990-1991 6th season
Johnson 10 2014-2015 4th season
Hanrahan 10 1956-1957 7th Season (before Division I era)
Johnson 8 2013-2014 3rd season
Buonguoro 7 1987-1988 3rd season
O'Toole 7 1998-1999 1st season
O'Connor 7 1982-1983 2nd season
TRIPLE DOUBLE
Three Stags reached double figures versus St. Peters, the first time a trio tallied 10 or more points in a game since January 30th versus Monmouth. Tyler Nelson (26 points), Mike Kirkland (15 points), and Marcus Gilbert (11 points) accomplished the task vs. Saint Peter’s.
STAGS AMONG CONFERENCE LEADERS
Marcus Gilbert is one of only 7 MAAC players to be listed in the top 20 in the conference in both points and rebounds per game.
Marcus Gilbert (16.6 ppg) and Tyler Nelson (9.7 ppg) are both among the top 25 MAAC players in points per game at 5th and 23rd respectively.
Malcolm Gilbert and Coleman Johnson each rank among the top 10 in the conference in blocks. League leader Drame averages 2.8 blocks per game, Coleman(5th) averages 1.4 and Gilbert(7th) 1.3
NEEDS A FEW MORE TRIPS
Tyler Nelson would need 28 free throw attempts over the next three games to qualify among the league and NCAA leaders in free throw shooting percentage. His .851 free throw percentage would rank 2nd in the MAAC and 53rd in the nation.
TOP GUN
Tyler Nelson is now 6th in the conference in made 3 points shots per game at 2.0
3-POINT FG MADE Avg/G
1. English, A.J.-ION 3.0
2. Casimir, Schadrac-ION 2.9
3. Richards, Shane-MAN 2.7
4. Lewis, Zach-CAN 2.4
5. Poole, Rob-SIE 2.1
6. Nelson, Tyler-FFD 2.0
TOO HONEST
Fairfield is the only team in the conference not to have a player listed among the top 15 in steals.
STAGS IN THE TOP 10
As a team Fairfield recently moved into the top 10 teams in the MAAC in Field Goal Shooting percentage. Thanks to a desperation miss with the clock winding down by Marist's Connor McClenaghan, Marist now trails Fairfield in Field Goal percentage by .0000001.
MAAC TEAM FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE LEADERS:
First 9 teams omitted
10. Fairfield.......28.....565.....1433 - .39400277
11. Marist..........28.....565.....1434 - .39400278
MAAC TEAM SCORING LEADERS:
Despite surpassing Marist in Field Goal percentage, the Stags remain last in the conference in team scoring at 60.4 points per game
