Stag senior Felicia DaCruz recorded her 392nd career assist in Fairfield’s recent win against Manhattan which passes Marybeth Chartier for 10th all-time in the program. That number also ranks in the top-40 among all active players in the country.
“I feel grateful and blessed to be able to play Division I basketball here and have the coaches I have and the teammates I have,” DaCruz said. “It’s truly an accomplishment and I feel extremely proud of myself and my teammates. Without my teammates I wouldn’t be able to accomplish this goal.”
“Felicia has worked as hard as any player that I have ever coached,” Head Coach Joe Frager said. “She has gotten progressively better through her career and has always been a team first player for us and I think that assist mark reflects that.”...
Her numbers to the casual observer don’t really jump off the page,” Coach Frager said. “But when you add up all the little things she does for us, taking charges, and just the way she carries herself that means a lot to a basketball team. As a coach and to someone who really knows the game I know how valuable she is to our program and how much she’s going to be missed next year.”....
“I saw her at an AAU tournament down in Georgia take a charge against a kid who weighed about 250 pounds, I thought she got killed,” Frager said. “You really couldn’t see her when the kid fell on top of her and she popped right back up and played the rest of the game. It was her toughness and that kind of persona is what really sold us on Feesh.”...
“It was a huge learning experience for me in terms of getting to know this program, getting to know Coach Frager’s coaching style and the way he likes to play,” DaCruz said. “The first year was learning from Desiree Pina and Taryn Johnson and Katelyn Linney and Brittany MacFarlane and a bunch of others that taught me what it means to be a part of this program and what it’s like to leave a legacy here and be a big part of this program.”....
“It just comes down to taking care of the basketball,” DaCruz said. “That’s always something that has stuck in my brain ever since high school and AAU days. My AAU coach was always on me to make sure I didn’t turn the ball over and that was the kind of thing that stuck in my brain and coming here I knew as a point guard that’s one of your major priorities to make good decisions and not turn the ball over. I try to do that as best as I could.”
“I think it’s having been through it,” Coach Frager said. “At the end of her sophomore year and postseason workout she started to regain some of the confidence in her ability to shoot the ball. She wasn’t looking over her shoulder when she made mistakes in her junior year and had the confidence that she was going to stay in there and lead the team and I think that was a turning point for her.”...
