Fairfield University earned the 2014-15 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Commissioner’s Cup for women’s athletics which is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in the championship sports conducted within the conference. It marks the eighth time that Fairfield athletics won the women’s Commissioner’s Cup with the last coming after the 2008-09 season. The Stags program has also won the overall Commissioner’s Cup four times and the men’s Commissioner’s Cup three times.
"Winning the Commissioner’s Cup is the result of the effort and dedication our student-athletes and coaches. It also reflects the support of our administration, faculty and support staff,” Director of Athletics Gene Doris said. “The Commissioner’s Cup is a benchmark of excellence because it is the culmination of the successes of many teams. I know our alumni and friends share my pride in an accomplishment that we strive to reach each year".
Fairfield University won two MAAC championships this spring – women’s lacrosse and softball – to push the program over the top in the standings. And, nearly every program advanced to their respective conference championship tournament this year. As a program, Fairfield University owned a .556 winning percentage in MAAC play overall.
Fairfield took the top spot with 86.00 points, followed by Marist (76.50), Monmouth (73.25), Quinnipiac (69.50), Siena (65.00), Canisius (58.25), Rider (55.00), Niagara (48.00), Iona (46.25), Manhattan (43.50) and Saint Peter’s (18.75).
“I would like to congratulate Fairfield University and its athletic director Gene Doris on winning the MAAC Women’s Sports Commissioner’s Cup,” Rich Ensor said. “Fairfield consistently challenges in the Cup race, last winning it in 2008-09, and the competitiveness of their program reflects the school’s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom.”
