From Phil Strum in the POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL about today's game in Alumni Hall:
The Marist College women’s basketball team could make a statement Sunday even though all it wants is another victory.
The Red Foxes (1-7) visit Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason favorite Fairfield at 2 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Fairfield, Connecticut. Marist knocked off defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac 56-47 Thursday and have the opportunity to follow up seven straight non-league losses by going 2-0 in December league play against arguably the MAAC’s toughest competition....
Giorgis pointed out that the Red Foxes won’t have the player who possibly performed the best against Fairfield last season since that was Madeline Blais, who transferred to Dayton in the offseason. Blais had 16 points and nine rebounds on Jan. 6, had 24 points in the second half of Marist’s 56-50 win over Fairfield on Feb. 23 and 21 points in Marist’s 67-50 win in a MAAC semifinal.
“They’ll be loaded for bear. They lost their first one at home,” Giorgis said. “I think we’re playing with a little more confidence. We’re just trying to take it one game at a time and go with that old adage. We’ll see what Fairfield has to offer. We know they’re preseason number one and they beat us last year at our place (56-55 on Jan. 6).”...
Giorgis said the difficult non-conference schedule helped his team sharpen its skills heading into the MAAC schedule and the Red Foxes continue to improve.
“The athleticism is different and these are teams that know our team well,” Giorgis said. “(Fairfield coach) Joe Frager is an excellent coach and we have to be ready for all the things they throw at us.”
