Local coverage - A pregame article on Marist and a postgame article after the game but just a few lines in the CT POST's College Roundup:
Marist hit 10 of its 13 shots in the third quarter, including eight straight during a seven-minute stretch, as host Fairfield dropped its third straight game, 72-57 at Alumni Hall. Kelsey Carey led the Stags (3-3, 0-2 MAAC) with 13 points while Samantha Cooper had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Tori Jarosz and Sydney Coffey each scored 20 points for Marist (2-7, 2-0 MAAC). ...
From Mike Benischek in the POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL:
Two days after capturing its first win of the season, the Marist College women’s basketball team put together a dominating performance on the road against the team picked as the preseason favorite to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
"We were in the locker room and we said, 'We're 2-0. We're undefeated,'" Marist coach Brian Giorgis said, stressing the role those seven losses played in preparing his team for the MAAC schedule. "We played so many good teams and we had played some teams that were better than us close. We hadn't put 40 minutes together. ... I just thought we were getting better."
Each of the Red Foxes' deficiencies evident in those losses also seemed long gone on Sunday, though Giorgis was quick to say "We still have a long, long way to go."...
Marist (2-7) trailed the Stags (3-3) 23-15 after the first period, but a 10-0 run, with Sydney Coffey scoring the first six points of the second quarter, gave the Red Foxes their first lead.
"That was senior leadership," Giorgis said. "We talked about her needing to step up and being more assertive."....
