Stags host IPFW on Sunday at 2:00 pm in Alumni Hall

The Stags (3-5)(0-2) host IPFW (4-6) on Sunday in Alumni Hall at 2:00 pm. The team is coming off their fifth-straight loss as they fell 59-35, on the road to Cornell. The Stags shot a season-low .254 in the loss. However, the Stags check into the game against IPFW committing the sixth fewest fouls in the country with a total of 110. Fairfield has also committed just 109 turnovers through their first eight games, the 16th lowest in the country. The 13.8 fouls per game ranks 14th in the country and the 13.6 turnovers per game is the 36th best number in the country.

THE IPFW SCOUTING REPORT: The Mastodons come into the contest with a 4-6 overall record but their style of play will provide challenges to any team. IPFW is an up tempo squad which ranks in the top 35 in the country in possessions per 40 minutes with 78.5. The fast style is started on the defensive front, as they average 11.3 steals per game, the top in the Summit League and in the top-25 in the country. However, they are not a very big team, with just 1.9 blocks and 37 rebounds per game. Also, the team is 1-5 this year when they have fewer points in the paint. In her first season on the team, Kamilah Carter leads the team with 17 points per game, with 21 3-pointers, also a team-high. Josie Fisher also averages 12.3 points. As a team, the Mastodons have limited their opponents to 4.3 3-pointers per contest, however, other teams are shooting 35 percent from behind the arc.

The only place that I could find this information was hidden on the Fairfield Athletics Twitter page. Regardless of how effective this promotion idea is or isn't, it should be on the Stag website's PROMOTION SCHEDULE just like every other school does that have game day promotions or at the very least in the pre-game release. Unfortunately, the Stag website has eliminated the PROMOTION SCHEDULE from the FAN ZONE page. The idea behind a Promotion Schedule is for the fans and potential ticket buyers to know in advance what the promotions are and plan accordingly. We went to many autograph sessions in AH and they were very popular with the young girls whether they played b-ball or not. Dianne Nolan's and Joe Frager's teams always seemed to enjoy them too. These last minute promotions that most fans don't know about clearly are NOT the best way to get more fans into AH. How hard would it have been when the 2015-16 schedules were released to plan, create and implement a PROMOTION SCHEDULE for AH and WBA? Apparently too hard.

“It is huge, it was very important for us to get a win today,” Joe Frager said. “Being in a mid-major conference like we are, it all comes down to conference play. The goal all along is to keep getting better, and I thought today we got better."....

“I think the girls got confidence because we shot the ball well early and I think that was really, really important,” Frager said. “They got their legs under them when they were able to knock those shots down.”....

Lizzie Ball became the first Stag since Felicia DaCruz in 2014 to dish out 10 or more assists in a game. The senior also became the first Stag in four years to swipe five steals in a game (Taryn Johnson on Feb. 19, 2011 against Loyola). All with one turnover.

“Plays are a huge part of our offense,” Ball said. “I think as a point guard communication is a major factor. Having everybody focused and having everybody on the same page with everything.”

“I know personally I’ve been playing with Lizzy for three years and whether she started or played 10 minutes, I always look up to her,” Carey said. “She’s my point guard…as a point guard it’s her job to lead us and I think she did an amazing job today.”

“I’m just so happy,” Ball said with a laugh. “There’s nothing else I can say…Obviously it gives us a ton of confidence, I’m ready for practice tomorrow and then St. John’s.”
