Good local coverage in the CT POST by Chris Elsbery:
Whatever it was, halfway through the season the Stags were struggling to find themselves. But over the last two weeks, it looks like the Stags have finally found their identity. With Kelsey Carey scoring 18 points, barely missing a third straight 20-plus point game, Fairfield rolled past Niagara 61-43 for its fourth straight win and sixth in its last seven games Friday night at Alumni Hall.
“We’re starting to play better. We’re starting to come into our own,” Frager said. “We just have to try and sustain it. The mantra every day in practice is ‘try and get better today.’”....
“I think we’ve realized that when we play hard and work as a team, we get going,” Ball said. “We feed off each other, we feed off our defense and when we get defensive stops, it gets our offense rolling.”...
The Stags were picked by the league’s coaches as the preseason favorites to win the MAAC but those expectations, along with a five-game stretch where Fairfield lost to Hofstra, Iona, Marist, Albany and Cornell (scoring just 39 points), had them under .500 (3-5) and searching for some leadership.
“At the beginning of the year we weren’t completely healthy, I think the pressures of the expectations, and we came right out of the gates having to play Marist and Iona,” said Frager about the Stags’ start. “And at that time, I don’t think we were playing our best basketball.”
But now, with four straight wins, maybe Fairfield (12-10, 7-6 MAAC) is playing its best basketball. “I’ve told the kids, there’s not a team in the league that we can’t beat,” Frager said. “But on the other hand, there’s no margin for error in the fact that there’s no one that we can’t lose to. I’m happy with where we are and I’m just taking things one game at a time.”
