For the fifth time in the last seven years, the Fairfield University Women’s Basketball team will play in a national postseason tournament. The Stags received a bid to participate in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) for the fourth-time in program history. The four WBI selections are tied with Northern Kentucky and McNeese State for the most of any school in the country since the WBI was founded in 2010. The Stags’ version of March Madness starts on the road on Thursday at 7pm when they travel to the RAC Arena in Baltimore to take on the UMBC Retrievers. The winner will be moving on to the quarterfinals on either March 19 or 20 to play the winner of #2 Youngstown State (19-12) and #7 Stony Brook (17-14). “We are all really excited,” Head Coach Joe Frager said. “Having any opportunity to be selected to play in a national postseason is an honor. It’s what all teams strive for. We appreciate the opportunity and we are excited for it.”“The first step is to be selected and you always want to put on a good showing,” Coach Frager said. “It does two things: It extends the careers of your seniors, which is always a great thing, and you can use it to build up to next year. It gives us the opportunity to finish the year on a high note. Our objective is to take this as far as we can.”The Stags have made their mark in the national postseason under Head Coach Joe Frager, who will be on the postseason sidelines for the fifth time in the last seven years with the Stags. Over that span, only one MAAC program has more postseasons than the Stags (Marist). The University of Maryland Baltimore County, or UMBC as the Retrievers are commonly called, makes their debut in the WBI and their first postseason appearance since the 2011 WNIT. UMBC was also upset in their quarterfinal tournament game, as 14-16 #5 Binghamton defeated 17-13 #4 UMBC. The team is led by a junior duo Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson who combined for 29.2 points out of the team’s 58.1 points per game, which was fifth in the America East. McCarley was named to the All-America-East First Team and All-Defensive Team, while Wilson received Second Team honors.
UMBC was (8-6) at home in their 4,024 seat Retriever Athletic Center (RAC) and averaged 614 fans.
During the Regular Season UMBC beat Rider twice while the Stags also beat Rider twice. The Stags and UMBC both beat Loyola and LaSalle. UMBC lost to Albany twice and the Stags once.

Frager has done a decent job overall but this was a preseason "n" team. Disappointing.

I don't know if the Women's games has changed like the Men's game has over the last 2-3 years, but new rules are pointing to more quickness, more offense and more guard play. We did not have that this year, and now we are losing our 2 starting guards. One of those guards, Lizzy Ball, improved tremendously, but she could not carry this team.
This coming season will be a big transition year in the backcourt. And when you lose your top 2 players in the backcourt, that is usually tough. Our frontcourt "should be" one of the best in the MAAC. But the women need more quickness, more offense and more guard play.
