Today at noon Fairfield University honored the University's benefactor Charles F. Dolan with the award of degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in "recognition of his remarkable contribution to our culture industry, his exemplary vision and tenacity as a media pioneer, and his important contribution to Fairfield University as a trustee and donor who has supported scholarship funds and the Fairfield University Dolan School of Business". Charles F. Dolan is a John Carroll University dropout and was born in Cleveland, Ohio and now lives in Oyster Bay on Long Island. The son of an inventor, he served in the U.S. Air Force and studied at John Carroll University before entering the telecommunications field. He is 90, founded Cablevision and HBO, owns Madison Square Garden Corporation and the AMC Network and has a net worth of $6 billion. In 2000, Mr. Dolan donated $25 million to the University and the Business Department's name was changed to the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. The Dolan Center for Science and Technology is John Carroll University's showcase building. Completed in 2003 at a cost of over $66 million, it houses JCU's science departments, including Mathematics and Computer Science. From 2001 through early 2002, Charles Dolan was a major bidder in the sale of the Boston Red Sox. Dolan submitted a maximum bid of $750 million, but ultimately lost out to a group headed by John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino. Dolan's son, James Dolan owns the NBA NY Knicks and the NHL NY Rangers. Charles Dolan's brother Larry Dolan (85) owns the MLB Cleveland Indians. A family member worked in a school on Long Island that his daughters attended. He and his wife always treated her with a respect and kindness not shown by many of the other very wealthy parents. He is a classy individual.

The man transformed Fairfield University with his generosity. We have much to be thankful for. Well deserved!
I didn't realize that 5 Dolan family members, all women, have attended Fairfield. That is quite the family legacy!
