The NY Mets aren't the only team in the tri-state area that can have a player hit 3 home runs in a single game. For those Fairfield University baseball fans who made the trip to Long Island, they were witnesses to something that hadn’t been accomplished for 30 years. Junior Mitch Williamsslugged three home runs becoming the first Stag since Mike Svab in 1987 to accomplish the feat. The three long balls were part of a five home run barrage for the Stags (13-14)(4-2) who defeated Hofstra 17-11. To make the connection between the two first basemen even more unique, both Williams and Svab blasted the three homers on the same date April 11.
“Before the game I definitely felt like I had a good batting practice and was just excited to play,” Williams said. “I had an opportunity to talk to a childhood role model of mine, (former WWE star) Pete Gasparino and just wanted to put good swings on the ball.”
Williams who is in the midst of the best week of his collegiate career has now driven in 10 runs in his last four games.
“It feels good to be mentioned in company like that,” Williams said of tying the program record. “But looking back on it, I think what I’ll remember the most is just being part of a great offensive game and getting a W.”
Only the top 6 teams will qualify for the 2017 MAAC Baseball Tournament (May 24-27). This year it will be hosted by both Canisius and Niagara Universities and played at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls, NY. Last season the #1 Stags (32-26)(17-7) beat #2 Siena 18-2 for the title.
The MAAC Regular Season Champion was the overall MAAC Champion prior to the institution of the MAAC Tournament in 1994. From 1982 through 1993, the MAAC Baseball Champion was determined by regular season conference records. From 1990 through 1993, the MAAC, which was split into two divisions, had a North Division Champion and a South Division Champion.
The Stags have been in the MAAC Championship game 3 times (2016, 2000, 1995) with a (1-2) record and are (0-2) in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
