The Fairfield University Men's Soccer team was selected fifth in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason coaches' poll as the annual rankings and preseason team was announced. Senior Angus Hastings represented the Stags on the conference's All-MAAC Preseason team, collecting one of the four back positions. Quinnipiac University secured the top spot in the poll with 113 points and seven first-place votes, followed by defending champion Rider University with 110 points and three top-votes. Monmouth received the number three slot in the poll with its 95 poll points with Siena taking fourth with 88 points which included one first-place vote. After Fairfield, the rest of the poll was rounded out by Canisius College (61 points), Marist College (60 points), Iona College (48 points), Manhattan (39 points), Niagara (29 points), and Saint Peter's (20 points).
Last season the Stags finished at (5-9-3)(3-6-1) and were in the NCAA Tournament in 1999, 2006, 2008, 2011.
The team, under Head Coach Carl Rees, will open its 2017 campaign with a pair of games on the West Coast, beginning with Oregon State University on August 25. The Stags will complete its two-game trip with a contest at the University of Portland on August 27.
