Fairfield University Volleyball has been named the Fairfield Sportspersons of the Year, as announced by the Fairfield County Sports Commission. The Stags, who won their second consecutive MAAC Championship last fall, will represent the Town of Fairfield at the Fairfield County Sports Night Awards Dinner on Monday, Oct. 16 at the Stamford Marriott. The Sportsperson of the Year Award is selected by a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, recognizing one winner from each of the 16 towns that comprise Fairfield County. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2016-Aug. 2017. Fairfield Volleyball had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2016. The Stags were only the second team in MAAC history to post an 18-0 conference mark (Fairfield, 2006) and the first to cap that feat by winning the MAAC crown. That unprecedented run through the MAAC was part of a 22-match winning streak – the longest in the nation during the 2016 season. Fairfield challenged ninth-seeded and No. 15 nationally-ranked Michigan State in the NCAA Championship First Round to wrap up the year at 28-6.
