For the second time in three years, the Fairfield University Field Hockey team (9-11)(4-2) will travel north for its First Round NCAA Tournament game. The Stags will play the Patriot League's Boston University (13-7)(6-0) again on Wednesday, November 8 at New Balance Field on the BU campus. #20 nationally ranked BU is (7-3) at home and the Stags are (3-7) on the road. The winner of this game will play at the #1 nationally ranked, University of Connecticut (19-0)(7-0) in a Second Round game on November 11. Connecticut has qualified for the NCAAs in 15 consecutive seasons, including back-to-back national titles in 2013 and 2014. The team will enter as the No. 1 overall seed as they seek the programs’ 15th NCAA Final Four appearance and fifth national title.
In 2015, Fairfield and BU met in the first round of the NCAA tournament with the 15th-ranked Terriers pulling away with a 6-1 win on its home field. "We had a tough time with them two years ago," Head Coach Jackie Kane. "But I think we are different team this year and I think we have developed over the last two years since we played them. This team is focused and has proven it can win in different situations. We are happy to be in the tournament and will develop a game plan that will put us in the best position to win."
This will be the 10th meeting between the two schools and BU has won all of the previous nine. The teams met every year from 2005-12 before meeting in the NCAAs two seasons ago. The Terriers have played in 18 NCAA tournament games in their history and have been victorious on five occasions.
