Fairfield University Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann announced Tuesday the hiring of David Barrett as the Head Coach of the Women's Soccer program. Barrett spent the previous 17 years as the Head Coach at Illinois Wesleyan University achieving significant postseason success during his tenure, earning NCAA tournament bids in eight of the last nine years and recording an overall winning percentage of .712.
Barrett, a native of Hadley, Mass., returns to New England to become the fifth Head Coach in the history of the Fairfield women's soccer program.
"It is with great excitement that we announce David Barrett as the next Head Coach of our Women's Soccer program," said Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann. "Coach Barrett emerged from an extensive national search for his proven ability to lead and develop a program into a perennial conference and national contender, for his clear alignment with our institutional core values and for the type of educator and mentor he will be to our student-athletes. Coach Barrett has an exceptional track record of success at every stop in his educational and professional journey. His soccer acumen and his knowledge of the national soccer scene will serve him well as the leader of our program. I am pleased to welcome Dave and his family to the Fairfield community."
"David impressed me instantly as an accomplished educator and someone who will champion the experience of our student-athletes," said Fairfield University President Mark R. Nemec PhD. "His track record of competitive success is enviable and I am excited to see the development of our women's soccer program as we endeavor to use Athletics as a vehicle to enhance our national identity."
"Personally, my wife and I are both native New Englanders, and it is wonderful to come home to Connecticut to raise our children. I'd like to thank Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann, President Nemec, and the entire search committee for offering me this opportunity. It's an honor to join the Fairfield community and I certainly want to carry on the proud tradition of the Stags women's soccer program."
Last season the Stags were (6-9-2) overall and (4-5-1) in the MAAC. They lost to Iona in the First Round of the 2017 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship.
