LAST TIME OUT
Fairfield is coming off of a heartbreaking loss where the Stags played a difficult Rider team tough. Tyler Nelson led all scorers with 24, but 4 Stags players reached double digits include Jesus Cruz(14), Ferron Flavors(14) and Wassef Methnani. For Quinnipiac Senior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had 17 points off the bench to lead five players in double figures as the Quinnipiac men's basketball team defeated Siena 76-69 on Sunday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats, who defeated Siena on the road 71-70 on Jan. 1, completed a two-game sweep of the Saints for the first time since joining the MAAC in 2013-14.
QUINNIPIAC
The word Quinnipiac is derived from the Native Algonquian language, and loosely translated the word means, "Poor shooting team." A more literal translation from Algonquian to English yields, "men who always miss with their arrows."
SHOOTING PERCENTAGES
Quinnipiac is last in the conference in Field Goal Percentage shooting a woeful .406. They are also last in three point shooting percentage at .317, but are 8th in shooting from the Free throw line.
DEFENSIVE 3-POINT SHOOTING PERCENTAGES
The game also features two of the worst teams at defending the outside shot in the nation. For the season, out of the 351 Division I Teams in the nations, Quinnipiac is ranked 346th while Fairfield is 344th.
Three Pt FG Defense
RANK TEAM GM OPP 3FGA OPP 3FG PCT
344 Fairfield 18 406 164 40.4
346 Quinnipiac 20 429 175 40.8
In conference play Fairfield is ranked 11th in the conference, while Quinnipiac is 10th.
YOUNG CAN REBOUND
Cameron Young will present another challenge inside for the Stags he is currently 5th in conference in rebounding with 7.1 per contest.
RIGONI CAN SHOOT
Jacob Rigoni was 3-4 on three-pointers versus Siena to improve to just under 50 percent on the season (39-79). Amazingly Rignoni is only ranked 9th on the MAAC leader board as there are 8 MAAC players shooting better than 500 from deep in MAAC play this season. Meanwhile there are only 3 qualified players in the nation shooting over 500 from deep this season, and if any of these 8 MAAC performer can hit enough shots to qualify (2.5 per game), they would move on to the list of the nations leaders. Rigoni is 11 makes short of qualifying.
DOUBLE DOUBLE
For the third straight game a Stag player contributed a double double this time it was Tyler Nelson with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
NOT SO PERFECT FROM THE LINE
After missing a free throw that could have brought Tyler Nelson back to the line with a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, knowledgeable fans were heard moaning statements like, "He missed again!" But the last time he missed was last year, as Tyler Nelson had made every free throw attempt since the start of 2018. But unfortunately Tyler Nelson's consecutive made free throw streak ended at 34. It was one of the longest such streaks in Fairfield history and he became the first Stag player to hit 34 consecutive shots from the charity stripe since Yorel Hawkin's streak of 34 in 2010. Nelson's last miss had come versus Manhattan on December 30th.

HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
No Defense
The mood in the Stags’ locker room was still upbeat, as players were reportedly still enthusiastic about head coach Sydney Johnson’s policy of never forcing them to play any defense whatsoever. “Coach is awesome about letting us do whatever we like when we don’t have the ball,” an unnamed player stated. Coach doesn't feel that it is important that we pursue loose balls, hustle or guard anyone. Just as long as we look like we are constantly switching around he's pretty satisfied. "In the past I played for coaches who lectured us about silly stuff like closing out on the ball, and challenging shots, but Coach Johnson doesn’t care about any of that stuff. He’s the best.” Fairfield has given up 84 or more points in the last three games.
NEUTRAL SITE
The Stags have a rare late season neutral site game, and hope to take advantage of the opportunity to add 1 to the win column.
