.....is difficult to predict. Rakim Sanders had a huge year at Fairfield as one might have anticipated coming from the ACC, and yet the Stags’ final ranking (100) didn’t differ much from the pre-season (94) either.
I disagree 100%. Transfers have a Major impact on Mid Majors and in particular the MAAC. The mis-perception of transfers is that because they were rated very high in HS that the “expectations” for success from these Division I transfers is too high. Transfers, just like Freshman, can be failures, but I believe I higher percentage of Transfers succeed as compared to Freshman. IMO, we should get 1-2 transfers each year and 2-3 frosh each year.
In last year’s MAAC Championship game, there were at least 4 Division I transfers that played prominent, if not dominant roles……. Rakim, Wade, Etherly and Walker. And Iona, the MAAC’s 1st place team had their entire frontcourt made up of transfers ……. Glover, Ridley and Desouvre.
You can look at Hyland, Oglesby and Galvanoni and say Transfers did not work, but you also say Rakim, Wade, Ajou and Evanovich did work. And then you have middle ground players like Sam Spann….. even he was 1st Team All –MAAC as a junior. Or Mamadou….. a valuable bench player.
A couple of transfers here and there, every other year or so, is OK. But it should be based on need. Certainly not the Transferpalooza/Jucorama going on in New Rochelle.

Speaking of transfers, the NCAA has given a guideline regarding how they will rule on the 'sick relative' transfer requests. In a nutshell, if your relative isn't within 100 miles of the school you want to transfer to, don't ask to be able to play immediately.
This actually is a somewhat positive decision for Fairfield, as we are within 100 miles of NYC, where there are a lot of good players that chose to leave NYC..... and their seems to be a lot of sick relatives there too.
We do have an open scholarship right now. He is also from Plainfiled NJ, so he is within the new 100 mile rule of the transfer waiver (sick Grandmom). So if he makes his decision on Thursday to be a Stag, he can enroll on Friday, and hit the winnning basket vs Central CT on Saturday.
