A truly wonderful and inspirational story on the human spirit. Kudos to Coach Barrett, his staff, the Stag Women's Soccer team and the University.
Head Coach David Barrett has emphasized a 'Never Give Up' mindset to the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team, and their newest signee exemplifies that phrase in every sense of the word. The Stags announced the signing of four-year old Anthony Muoio, who committed to the Stags through the Friends of Jaclyn program.
"We talk about some of our core values that try and shape who we are," Coach Barrett said. "Humility is one and I think he really epitomizes that. Hard working, tough, I think those are all characteristics that we demand from our athletes and they see it through this four-year old boy."
"One of the things I stress about Anthony is that he's always been such a happy kid," Anthony's mother, Sarah said. "His happiness is more for other people, he enjoys seeing other people have a good time or be successful. To see something that is done for Anthony makes me very emotional and is very important to our family because he does have a lot of tough things he deals with in life. To have people do this for him is really nice."
Anthony was diagnosed with a brain tumor at just five months old and was rushed into an intensive nine hour surgery to save his life. Anthony, who was given just a 50 percent chance to survive the procedure, fought through the adversity and has experienced an amazing recovery.
"I learned how to be a man and how to fight through everything," Anthony's father, Robert said. "Any aches or pains that we have it's a joke. He's my strong man and the tank of our family."
Through Anthony's presence at practices and games this season, the Stags will have a teammate who constantly shows toughness and hard work through a four-year old's smile.
"It's really inspirational to me," junior Bre Cocuzzo said. "It shows that the power of your brain and strong mental toughness and pushing through adversity really does have this powerful affect."
