Verbal Commits has an interesting recruiting stat which allows you to compare schools. Their Average Rating shows the caliber of recent recruits, based on some independent third-party service. Not perfect, but it is interesting. Based on that, the player ratings of each school in the MAAC are: Siena 2.33, Quinnipiac 2.31, St. Peter’s 2.25, Iona 2.20, Marist 2.09, Niagara 2.09, Manhattan 2.08, Rider 2.04, Canisius 2.00, and Fairfield 2.00.
Some observations: 1) This metric shows we trail other MAAC schools in recruiting quality. 2) While not significant against a few schools, we are well behind Siena, Quinnipiac St. Peter’s and Iona in player ratings. We need to boost recruiting which most think will happen under Jay.
MAAC average is 2.12, while Atlantic 10 is 2.4, Colonial is 2.14, Patriot is 2.09. Big East is 3.11 (with Providence 3.31).
Interesting that Holy Cross is also at 2.00, same as Stags. I believe that is the lowest rating a school can get.

It shows 2 things. (1)... we are not getting any 3-star recruits, and (2) we have not been getting a lot of transfers from the Big Time schools. That is critical if we want to be in the top half of the MAAC. I think Neftali was a 3-star recruit.
The last time I saw a 1-star recruit, he was a division 2 player.

I like looking at the recruiting ratings, and if a MAAC school gets a 3-star, that's something to keep an eye on, but I largely don't think MAAC-level recruiting grades mean a whole lot.
A few past examples for fun:
- Curtis Cobb was a 3-star. And there were moments when he looked like a 3-star. - Malcolm Gilbert was a 4-star. Marcus was a 2-star. - Tyler Nelson didn't warrant a grade on 247sports, and we know how that turned out. - Sean Grennan was a 3-star. - Only D3 Williams was interested in Miye Oni until Yale offered him late, and he went in the NBA draft last year.
Sure - at the top levels - it's easier to pick out the kids that might be one or two and off to the NBA... but at this level you really gotta rely on the coaches and what we hope is their more up-to-date knowledge, to find the gems.
I think Maidoh is a great example. I'm no basketball expert - but when I watch him play... the negative factor of his weight is obvious (though I swear he's a pretty tough kid rebounding)... but everything else (needs to work on FTs) about his game looks to me like something that you'd expect to see at a higher major. I think we might be starting to see the same with AJR. A pair of 2-stars that in a few years we hope people are wondering... how'd Fairfield end up with a couple of fowards at 6'10" and 6'7+" with their kind of athleticism!?!?

No doubt. Maidoh had some impressive interest. But AJR was off the radar. They should be a handful to contain by this time next season.

well said-
at our level you're usually getting either an athletic kid who has limits to his actual game (can't shoot, dribble , etc) or you're getting a kid with great game and limits to his athletic ability. (strength , quickness etc)
its up to the coaching staff to develop the weaker points over 4 years
I think from the 2nd podcast, JY notes that he leans toward the first option... athletic - but whom he believes can be coached up vs. the guy with the better game but the limited athletic ability... then he quickly notes a star player from his Stony Brook days that was neither long, nor particularly athletic. Sometimes you have an idea what you want - but then there is the reality of what you find. Something like that, anyway...

Actually I'm not sure I have ever seen a 1-star. Seems like the basic rating is a 2 and anything above usually portends a possibility to be better than a mid to low major type player. Therefore with that as a background, many 2s are much better than others in the same classification, meaning it is up to the coaches to identify the elite within that class plus coach them up of course. In-exact science for sure, but even if a MAAC or similar level type program brings in one or two above that level, team success is not guaranteed in any way.

The ratings on verbal commits are mostly crap. I wouldn't read into them too much.
I DO think Siena is doing very well in recruiting under Carm but I think it's mostly dumb luck that VC has them first. Hell, they don't even have Pickett listed as a PG.
VC is good for some things but usually not ratings and details.
