Fairfield Professor Sues Student After Dispute Over Failing GradeA professor is suing both the student and university after the school allowed a failing grade to be changed, the Connecticut Post reported. A professor at Fairfield University has filed a lawsuit against a student, as well as the school, following a dispute about whether the student received an unfair grade, according to the Connecticut Post. Sharlene McEvoy teaches business law and is asking that university officials be prohibited from changing the grade, the Post reported. In spring 2020, McEvoy administered a remote final exam, worth 100 percent of each student's grade, and required it be delivered to her home by June 12, according to the Post. Student Joseph Moran, of New Jersey, mailed his test June 8, but it did not arrive until June 16, resulting in a failing grade, the Post reported. Moran complained to McEvoy's department chair, McEvoy regraded the test and gave Moran a C minus, Moran appealed the grade again, and the school allowed the grade to be changed to "pass," according to the Post. McEvoy is arguing that Moran violated university procedure by not trying to resolve the issue with her first, and she has accused the university of defamation, the Post reported. patch.com/connecticut/fairfield/fairfield-professor-sues-student-after-dispute-over-failing-gradewww.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/professor-sues-student-who-complained-to-university-about-failing-grade/ar-AAMNxtL?ocid=BingNewsSearch

McEvoy was there when I was-had her for a business law class-she had a “different” personality. I think she is also suing on another matter because she was passed over for something.

A remote final exam worth 100% of a student's grade that requires it to be snail mailed or dropped off by messenger!?!? That sounds off to begin with...
How does something like this even get in the media? As an aside, I once had a Fairfield professor change an F to a "pass." I don't recall it making the news!

The kid was given specific instructions and he didn’t comply. Deserves to be knocked. This doesn’t belong in the courts or the press though.

I’m all for student accountability but this Prof sounds like a nut on a power trip. Hard to fail the kid when they mailed the assignment 4 days in advance.

Sounds like a tough response by the prof, but how about some brains and responsibility on the other side.
First, she gave them a trackable pre paid envelope. The student did not track it.
Secondly, no guarantee anything gets anywhere by snail mail. If my semester grade were on the line, I'd at least track the receipt and better yet, if it was only 4 days, send it express mail.
On the other side, did this prof ever hear of a .pdf file, share drives (Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.)?
The student should learn a lesson. He was a bit frivolous IMO.
Sounds like the professor wanted a hard copy and made every possible effort for the students to get it there.
We still don't have all the facts, but agree, this issue does not belong in court or on the news. - I also think when the student went over her head it became a pissing contest. - I didn't like my C- on Dr. Fellicetti's politics paper but wasn't whining to Prof Donnarumma for a pass fail grade. (He would have told him to make it a D for being a crybaby.)
I kinda think like ctghostman, on this. The student had an obligation to get the paper where it needed to be by the deadline. The prof was very specific.
This is the knock on academia. Isn't an education supposed to be preparation for real life? If an RFP in commercial bidding is not filed by the closing date, you lose the sale.
Once again, common sense has failed us.
