Wednesday, November 24, 2021 • 2:00 PM EST
Bridgeport, CT
LAST TIME OUT
Fairfield beat crosstown rival Sacred Heart.
SERIES HISTORY
The Stags lost the only previous contest between these clubs last season, in what was arguably the worst loss in the Jay Young Era. Fairfield lost a lead in the final seconds of regulation falling in overtime by a score of 72-69 to a weak Stony Brook team.
THROWBACK COMIC OF THE DAY
In the Bleachers
In the Bleachers is a comic strip that comments on, and lampoons, sports. It was created in 1985 by American cartoonist/filmmaker Steve Moore and is currently syndicated internationally by Andrews McMeel Syndication.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
The Seawolves stumble into the game after dropping their first two contests in lopsided losses against very good competition (George Mason and Kansas). The Seawolves were selected Number 1 in the America East preseason poll and they have an experienced/older group of players. With an average age of 21.13, the Seawolves enter the 2021-22 campaign as one of 17 teams in the country with an average age above 21. The Seawolves boast a deep roster that contains 10 different players who have started a game in their careers and 10 athletes with a double-figure scoring game in their collegiate tenures. SBU beat SHU on Monday night suggesting SBU is fairly evenly matched with the Stags this year, as both teams are hovering around 200 on various ranking sites
THE SEAWOLVES
During the early 1950's, when the Stony Brook campus was located in Oyster Bay, the University's teams were known as the Soundmen or Baymen. From 1960 through 1966, the team competed as the Warriors. Beginning in 1966 Stony Brook competed as the Patriots/Lady Patriots, and held that name for nearly 30 years. In 1994, in an effort to stop confused fans from New England from attending their Football games, then-Stony Brook President Dr. John “Beef” Hamburger, Jr. III proclaimed a new team nickname for the program: the Seawolves. Apparently, Dr. Hamburger was looking for a name that would associate the University with nuclear class submarines The team introduced a new Mascot, Wolfie who was named by the Long Island Free Press, a finalist for the top college Mascot in Long Island. Sadly, Wolfie never actually won the award even though, there aren’t really any other colleges in Long Island. Here are some other notable facts about Wolfie
1 – Wolfie once marched in memorial day parade in Glen Cove
2 – Wolfie is not to be confused with other Wolfie’s like the more famous University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolf mascot
3 – Wolfie is not related to the more famous Wolfie from the Munsters.
DOUBLE DIGIT SCORERS
The Stags have three players averaging in double digits in scoring, Taj Benning(13.3), Jake Wojcik(11.0), and TJ Long (10.8)
MILESTONES
Jesus Cruz – secured 7 rebounds versus Sacred Heart and has now surpassed 500 rebounds for his career. Cruz becomes one of only 6 players in Fairfield history to secure 100 Steals, 100 assists, 500 Rebounds and 1000 points. Here are those players:
Tony George
Maurice Barrow
Shannon Bowman
DeWitt Maxwell
Greg Francis
Jesus Cruz
Cruz is 13 steals short of becoming the first Stag ever to secure 150 Steals, 150 assists, 150 Free Throws, 500 Rebounds and 1000 points.
MAGIC NUMBERS
12 – The number of games Jesus Cruz needs to appear in to establish a new Stags Record for games played.
120 – Points needed for Caleb Green to reach the 1000 Career point milestone.
138 – Points Taj Benning needs to reach the 1000 Career point mark.
HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
SEEKING SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE
Wolfie, the SBU Mascot recently visited Egan Chapel looking for spiritual guidance. So Father Maczkiewicz met with Wolfie and taught him how to meditate. Now Wolfie is an Aware Wolf.
Promotions Department announces “just basketball night”
In an effort to lure more fans to this weeks pre-thanksgiving game, the promotions department is holding its first ever “just basketball night.” According to the director of promotions, “in the past we have tried to lure fans to the game with give-aways and discount tickets, but we’ve dispensed with these kinds of stupid gimmicky things for this game and we are just going to have the teams play basketball.
Atheletic Director Paul Schlickman thinks the “just basketball” promotion is “Brilliant” and feels its “about time we did something special to promote the basketball program.” However some casual fans would like to see the team bring back some of the more successful promotions of the past like, “Bobble head dolls” and the always popular “Vomit Buckets” that were first introduced during Sydney Johnson's tenure just a few years ago. But the Stags Director of Promotions feels that we will get more fans to the game by just playing basketball, than the team would get by giving promotional discounts or by giving something away.
If attendance figures are as strong as University officials hope, the team may build on the just basketball concept by holding a “just officiating night” next season, where instead of being invited to watch basketball, fans will be lured to harbor yard to experience the thrill and excitement of watching NCAA basketball officials.
