This year’s MAAC Defensive Player of the Year is, Maddie Mills, from regular season co-champion Fairfield University. The versatile midfielder finished top 10 in multiple MAAC statistical categories, while helping to lead the Stag’s to a league best 9-1 record. On the season, Mills, ranked third in points (16), fourth in assists (6), fourth in game winning goals (2), and 10th in goals (5).
The 2022 MAAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year is Maddy Theriault from Fairfield University. As a freshman, Theriault, took home Rookie of the Week honors three different times during the season. On the field this season she scored four goals: in 10 games of action. Theriault, finished the season second in the conference in goals (7), fourth in points (18), and ninth in shots (44).
Fairfield had three players on the All-MAAC First Team with Mills, Theriault, and defender Caroline Kelly. Four student-athletes were named to the All-MAAC Second Team with Elle Scott, Reagan Klarmann, Allie Kirby, and Olivia Homan earning the honors. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Wright rounded out the accolades with a spot on the All-MAAC Third Team.
"We're obviously really pleased that the coaches in the MAAC recognized the accomplishments of our athletes," Head Coach David Barrett said. "It is always a team effort for any accomplishment, and I'm sure all of these players would be quick to thank their teammates for helping them along the way this year. I'm really happy for all of our selections; they have all worked very hard and deserve the recognition."
"This is a very deserving award for Maddie (Mills)," Coach Barrett said. "I think she proved to be the most effective box to box midfielder in the league. She clearly impacted the way we could defend and made others around her better."
"I am very grateful and proud to be receiving these honors," Mills said. "I want to highlight our amazing team that has inspired me every day to be the best player I can be. Their hard work, dedication, and support during this season is a constant reminder to me why I love soccer so much. I am excited to see what the rest of the season holds for us!"
"She (Maddy Theriault) is just getting more and more confident and is proving to be a real handful for defenders," Coach Barrett said. "She has had a great season so far and we're obviously really excited for the short-and-long term future with Maddy as a Stag."
"This award means so much to me and I'm so thankful that I've been given this honor," Theriault said. "I couldn't have done it without all my amazing coaches and teammates. I'm so grateful that I joined such an awesome program and I'm so blessed that I get to spend my next three years here. I love my team so much, and their constant love and support is what helped me get here."
The Stags posted a (14-3) overall record and a (9-1) mark in the MAAC, claiming a share of the 2022 MAAC Regular Season Championship, their first in a decade. The Stags will host their MAAC Semifinal contest against third-seeded Niagara on Thursday night at 7pm.
