Fairfield – Siena Early Edition Game Notes ♫ 22-23 - 173
Fairfield University (6-7, 1-1 MAAC) VS Siena (8-5, 2-0 MAAC)
Sunday, January 1, 2023 • 2:00 PM EST
Fairfield, CT
LAST TIME OUT
Fairfield defeated Marist 73-54 at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena last night. The Stags put forth a solid defensive performance, holding Marist to .077 percent shooting from deep and forcing 20 turnovers. Meanwhile, the Stags had one of their better shooting performances this season from deep, hitting 36% of those shots, led by TJ Long who went 5-10 from distance while scoring a career high 25 points. Supreme Cook also reached double digits with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
SERIES HISTORY
Siena has owned Fairfield over the years with the Saints holding a 46-32 game advantage over the Stags all-time. Siena is one of the few MAAC visitors that has won more than half the games on Fairfield's home court, with the Saints holding an 18-16 advantage as the visitors. The Saints have won 8 straight in the series and are the only MAAC program (other than newcomer Mount St. Mary’s) that Jay Young has never beaten, with Carmen Marciello going a perfect 8-0 versus Young. Perhaps the most memorable game in the overall series occurred in the 2010 MAAC championship, a game which Fairfield lost to the Saints in overtime by a score of 72-65.
ABOUT THE SIENA SAINTS
Siena enters the game with a 8-5 overall record including a perfect 2-0 record in MAAC play. The Saints defeated Quinnipiac last night 83-76, with three Saints Javian McCollum(25), Andrew Platek(19) and Jackson Stormo(14) all reaching double digits in scoring. Sophomore guard Javian McCollum leads the team in scoring (17.8 PPG) and passing (4.3 APG). Jackson Stormo (13.2 PPG & 6.1 RPG) and Andrew Platek (10.3 PPG) have also double-digit scoring averages. The Saints have shot 37.1% from 3-point distance – the best percentage of any MAAC team from beyond the arc.
HOME COOKING
Fairfield plays the sixth game in what looks like has become a 7 game home stand.
COMIC OF THE DAY
The Ward Cartoonist
The Mormon Cartoonist, aka the Ward Cartoonist is Arie Van De Graaff. His work appears regularly in both The New Era and The Friend. He has published several cartoon books.
70 STILL A MAGIC NUMBER
The Stags broke the 70 point mark for only the fourth time this season improving their record to 3-1 this season when they score more than 70 points in regulation. Under Jay Young the Stags are 19-4 over 4 seasons when scoring more than 70 points.
STILL LOOKING FOR 5 AT HOME
The Stags look to build off their 2 game home winning streak as they continue their pursuit of a 5 game home winning streak, something that has never happened under Jay Young. The longest home winning streak under Young stands at 4 and occurred during the 2019-2020 season when the Stags defeated Manhattan, SPC, Canisius and Monmouth. The longest overall winning streak in the Jay Young era occurred when the Stags won 5 straight games defeating Canisius, Niagara, Holy Cross, William & Mary and Fairleigh Dickinson during the 2021-22 season. This streak consisted of home and away games. The longest road winning streak is also 5 games with the Stags defeating Sacred Heart, Canisius, Niagara, William & Mary and Fairleigh Dickinson away from home

HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
Fairfield’s Offense on a Roll
Fairfield’s offense kicked in and the team finally broke the 120 point mark in MAAC play. Granted it took three games, but it’s still an accomplishment…
Arena Design Issues
As many people know the design of the Leo D. Mahoney arena is based on an arena design that was first used by the University of Warsaw. Sadly attendence at that forum has been very poor because of site line issues. Apparently, at the arena is Warsaw, pretty much anywhere you sit you end up behind a Pole.
