The stags open on the road against the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh is a middle of the pack team picked fifth of ten in the Patriot league preseason poll. A good first test for the stags on the road. The stags picked sixth of eight in the CAA coaches poll did not receive even one first place vote. That tells me that even Coach Baxter thinks he does not have a team that can win his league. As I have posted before M-Lax like M-basketball is using up a lot of the athletic resources at FF with little or non return. That needs to change IMO.

Doubled up by Lehigh, 20-10.
Good grief. What a wasted opportunity. We’re throwing resources at this sport and we’ve regressed…

A mid range Patriot league team Lehigh crushes FF 20-10. The Lehigh announcer spoke to coach Baxter before the game. Baxter said we will learn more about his team because of a competitive opening game. Well this is what I learned watching the matchup. The sixth place preseason ranking of FF in the CAA is probably correct. Lehigh dominated the stags and we can expect to be an afterthought in the CAA this season.

Doubled up by the 5th seed in the PL. We were not even competitive.
Let's just abolish all men's sports and end the golden era of Fairfield athletics under Paul Schlickman. I really miss Gene Doris now. This is just awful, awful, awful.

However, earlier this afternoon defending MAAC Champion Stag Women's Lacrosse (1-0) won their season/home opener 13-10 against PL Holy Cross before 684 fans at Rafferty Stadium. "A win is a win, that's true, but going forward if we want to put ourselves on the map, we've got to actually show up at very single game, to our level and not anyone else's level." said Head Coach Laura Field.Fairfield Women's Lacrosse returns to action this Wednesday with the first road trip of the campaign as they take on the #24 UConn Huskies. The UConn season/home opener against the Stags from Storrs is scheduled for 3:00 pm. fairfieldstags.com/sports/womens-lacrosse/stats/2023/holy-cross/boxscore/13378fairfieldstags.com/sports/mens-lacrosse/stats/2023/lehigh/boxscore/13400

What is Baxter’s contractual status?
Fairfield had a nice niche when few schools played high level lacrosse. Now all the Big Ten schools and a variety of other western schools started committing money to it, and they’ve leaped us.
Conversely, we dumped hockey and now look how QU, SHU, and UConn are able to compete on the national level there overnight.
The athletic dept continues to lack vision and has made a series of poor hires in its biggest sports. A recipe for some pretty poor ROIs compared to the strides the school has made from an academic standpoint.

Baxter I thought was given a four year contract when hired in June 2019. Of course the spring of 2020 would have been his first season . So I think he is at the end of his contract unless the FF administration does something stupid and extends him.

So I think he is at the end of his contract unless the FF administration does something stupid and extends him. His hire seemed liked a good move at the time. Just hasn’t worked out. The next hire is really important as the gap between us and the top programs has grown in the last 4 years. We either are going to close that gap or we are going to be more an after thought.
