This fan believes Jay Young should be released as the FF head coach. He is not going to be able to get it done. The people in charge at Stonybrook new something and that is why JY did not get the H/C position when Pikelle (sp?) left for Rutgers. Replacing the coach needs to be completed in tandem with a deep dive into what is required for mens basketball to be competitive as campion109 indicates. If you just change the coach w/o making other changes I predict you will just be back in the same non-competitive position in 4-5 years. The administration has to determine what they want from mens basketball. Should FF be happy with just PARTICIPATING in D1 mens basketball because your other competitors for student applications also do so? Or does FF want a COMPETITIVE team that finishes in the top four or five every year and once every four or five years is the MAAC representative to the NCAA tournament ? Perhaps the evaluation will determine that FF cannot be competitive in mens D1 basketball and should reclassify to D2 or D3 status. The resources spent on mens basketball could be reallocated to other mens D1 sports like baseball or to the womens sports programs that are generally competitive in D1. Changes need to be made because the way things are operating simply is not sustainable . This is very clear to me.
And all this as we get to ready to celebrate the 49th birthday of one of the stars of the LAST Fairfield team to get to the NCAA's, Greg Francis (born 4/4 1974)
u are right. was going to compare it to the Eric Bienemy situation. was jay ever even interviewed for a HC position ?
Mikesdad, I am not a football fan so can u please explain?
Bienemy has been the Chief offensive coordinator for the last few years. He’s interviewed many times and been passed over for the jobs. Some indications are that Andy Reid is HC and more so the OC.
All that being said, the hold call at the end of the game was correct but a face mask wasn’t called. Should have been offset. Probably still a field goal but with time on the clock for the Eagles to do something.
Listen, I share the disappointment of everyone here. But the anger…the outrage? That’s on you all. What during the course of this season gave you the idea the season would end any other way? What over the course of the past 4 years would give you the idea the season would end any other way? This is who we are. This is not just what this administration tolerates, but it’s what the hardcore fan base tolerates.
I have stopped going to games. I monitor but rarely post here any more. Many here hyped up this season with no rational reason to do so. We continue to hype up recruits that we know nothing about. Save me your outrage when Jay Young is back next year. Save me your outrage when we are in the PIG again next year. Stop going to games. Stop going to events. Stop giving your hard earned money and precious time to this program. If this still surprises you then you are just Charlie Brown trying to kick the football with Lucy holding it.
Hold on - that's not true.
1) The Stags had some promising underclassmen (Long, AJR, Cook, and Maidoh) that we had a reasonable expectation could be improving. 2) Incoming recruits included a very highly rated freshman (Johns), a former 4-star recruit that hadn't found his way at high majors but seemed to fit the profile of someone that would find success in the MAAC (Goodine), and an apparent solid veteran guard that could replace and possibly improve some of what we lost with Benning and Cruz (Fields). 3) Wojcik - although down in 2021-2022 - he had previously played at a near All-MAAC level and seemed like a good candidate to be a major contributor.
Most predictions had the Stags anywhere from #2 to #5.
And moreover, based on evaluating our roster against others in the MAAC, a couple independent analysts thought we were going to be very good…even upper tier or as one put it, the sleeper team that will surprise. That tells me that some people, likely more knowledgeable and objective than most on this board, felt we had the goods to compete.
I think Jay formed a very narrow vision on how to develop a winner early on. It was man to man defense. It didn’t matter that we did not have the athletes like Rutgers. He has held on to that without seeing the limitations of the players he recruited. We need a team that others fear. That is not this team today.

yes as ghostman said , long time assistant on a successful team who cannot get a head coaching gig. there are some extended circumstances with him , but its similar in the fact Jay was an assistant forever and did not get the head gig until us. what did all the other schools know (including stony)
AJR supposedly wants another year. That is a good thing if he can improve his range and comfort shooting.
I would love Jay to have a miraculous turnaround season, but let’s face it, odds are he is gone within another season or two. That also puts a drain on recruiting effectively unless the recruit loves the school more than the coach.

AJR did NOT participate in Senior day. Assume he will be back
