Tough way to give up a run in extras.

Grant Smeltzer started the 11th by striking out the batter, however he was able to reach second after a throwing error. With a runner at third, the ball went into the dirt and the catcher touched the ball with his mask and was called for an error allowing the go-ahead run to score.Box Scorefairfieldstags.com/boxscore.aspx?path=baseball&id=13243

I think a common thought which has been expressed regarding baseball is that quite often you see and experience something while attending a game (or watching on TV) that you have never seen before, and clearly this was a perfect example of that. Total shock and surprise to all of us sitting behind home plate when the call was made, especially because of the timing involved. I was unaware of the rule before, so I guess the ump was right in his call. But still, like the touch foul that cost Creighton big-time in the regional basketball final the other day, maybe this might have been a case where a little bit of "common sense" might have been the better way to handle this situation. Anyway no matter how you slice it this was a tough way for the Stags to lose this game even though in the grand scheme of things (non-league contest) it really doesn't mean a whole lot. However to those of us who were there this will be remembered for a long, long time!

However to those of us who were there this will be remembered for a long, long time! This entire contest was riddled with bad and bizarre calls. Ultimately the mask thing was the rule and correct call. However, this umpiring crew was horrible ON BOTH SIDES. I don't know where they find these guys. One call was a critical pitch punch out miles from the strike zone that could have influenced the outcome if the game. You can't blame a loss completely on officials. But I really despise when the officials are the story and not the players. I've found in attending many games the past few years that the officiating especially in baseball is way below acceptable.

From watching on TV... that K I think you are referring to was a bad call. I only saw the last few innings, but it really looked like the home ump was struggling with his strikes and balls. Did I understand correctly that the ump warned the FF 3B coach? I thought I heard someone (the coach?) yell, "that ball was a foot outside!" That's a warn-able offense? Because it was a coach? I thought it was kind of funny. Reminded me of giving someone a yellow card in soccer. This was definitely not a thing back in my day. You could hear some funny/annoyed banter from the crowd throughout the remainder.

This crazy call (which was probably correct according to the rules) made me flash back to another crazy call when the Stags faced (and defeated) Arizona State in the NCAA tourney. www.youtube.com/watch?v=14-8XUmKH90
