This was a day that Charlie Pagliarini will never forget. The Fairfield University Baseball infielder set the program's all-time career home run record as he blasted a go-ahead grand slam for the 36th homer of his career. To add to that accomplishment, he drove in a career-high seven RBI, leading the Stags to a 10-9 victory over UMass in the final non-conference game of the season. fairfieldstags.com/sports/baseball/roster/charlie-pagliarini/6058"It feels great to set the record," Pagliarini said. "It means a lot knowing I'm able to help the team win any way I can. I have such a great group of guys behind me and I'm really looking forward for the upcoming games."The win improves #1 Fairfield's record to (31-16) overall before their final series of the season as they host #8 Iona for a three-game set starting Thursday at 2:00 pm on Alumni Baseball Diamond. Heck of a career for Pagliarini. I assume he has a Covid year if he wants it. Does anyone know what he plans to do?

Heading into the final weekend, Pags is on the verge of a MAAC triple crown. His .402 average is four points better than Marist's Hot Bayram and eight points better than Canisius' Jackson Strong. He has a four-HR advantage over MSM's Shane Wockley (20 to 16). And he leads his closest RBI pursuer, Quinnipiac's Anthony Donofrio, 80 to 58. That RBI stat is mind-boggling to me. Charlie also leads the league in OPS, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and total bases. He trails teammate Noah Lucier in total hits, 73 to 72. There is absolutely no doubt he will win MAAC Player of the Year. The only remaining question is how high will he go in the MLB draft. maacsports.com/stats.aspx?path=baseball&year=2023 Fairfield has seen a lot of great hitters come and go during the Currier era. But a talent like his is generational. Gonna be a while before we see someone like him again. If you get the chance to watch Pags play this weekend, take it.

I attended the UMass game yesterday. Apart from Pagliarini's heroic afternoon, there are a few tidbits and takeaways worth noting.
-- Griffin Watson made a leaping, over-the-fence catch, robbing a UMass player of a three-run homer in the 3rd inning.
-- Evan Berta pitched two scoreless innings and got the win, lowering his ERA to 3.75 in the process. He is turning into a decent bullpen arm and needs to be considered for more high-leverage situations.
-- With two outs in the 7th, Grant Smeltzer took a hard ground ball off his shin and could barely walk. He shook it off, though, and got the last out. But I wonder about his availability for the Iona series, especially the doubleheader tomorrow.
-- Jack Erbeck pitched a dominant 9th inning to earn the save. He threw eight pitches -- all strikes -- struck out two, and looked like a genuine closer. It's only one game, but it's something to build on. That's the Jack Erbeck we're going to need in the MAAC tournament.

Stags are getting themselves a little pipeline into the minors the last few years. If he has the normal dream that most in his status would have of playing professional baseball, I would think that Pags has no choice but to make the move (assuming he gets drafted, which he will) when some major league team announces his name somewhere in the draft process. Even an early 20s kid is starting to get old with regard to MLB organizations. Therefore as much as it might be "fun" for him to try to come back and help the Stags (and fun for us fans watching him), I don't think that is the reality as to what will happen. And yes, upper half, maybe even mid-teens sounds about right based on what he has accomplished this season.
