A fellow '10 alum showed me this site, can't believe there is not a thread about rugby. With it growing exponentially at the collegiate level, our very own Fairfield Univ. Rugby Club has cemented themselves as national powerhouse, qualifying for the national D1 tournament last fall. I believe it is also the 60th anniversary of the team. I've been told that there has been 60-80 members for every season, so there is a decent amount of alums that have a tie to the program. Since it isn't an NCAA sport (for unknown reasons), there really is not much publicity for our team.
Also should be noted that we had a kid drafted in the first round in the Major League Rugby draft (found out from their instagram). He got drafted to the New York Ironworkers. Not much money in the game just yet, pretty much on par with professional lacrosse (who Fairfield publicizes a lot). Figured I start something on here with the hope other 'Red Ruggers', or just fans of the team can react and talk about the program. Saw people talking about the new field, it looks really nice, maybe its the next step into getting more support from the school. If I can find the schedule I'll post it.

I saw this on Twitter yesterday and reacted accordingly. The University does nothing to promote the rugby program despite President Nemec having a keen interest being a former D1 rugby player himself at Yale. I find the lack of communication about an athletics program of excellence with tremendous alumni support bewildering! One thing I would advice the person that controls the social media presence of the Red Ruggers is that Instagram is not enough. They need to get back on Twitter and resurrect their dormant account.

The University does not even list the historic (first and only field permanently designed, named and dedicated solely for rugby within the United States) on campus Grauert Field on the Stag website's Facilities page but does include the off campus Brooklawn Country Club. fairfieldstags.com/facilitiesLt. Hans Grauert Memorial Field was the first and only field permanently designed, named and dedicated solely for rugby within the United States. The Lt. Hans Grauert Memorial Field has meant a great deal to the entire Grauert Family since its dedication in 1969, and indeed to all the Fairfield Red Ruggers over the years, who have shown fierce loyalty and pride in their pitch. Knowing that Grauert Field, by design, has provided a place for good friends to meet since 1969 provided Mrs. Grauert a boundless source of joy and happiness, and never ceased to warm her heart. Mrs. Grauert remained an avid Fairfield Rugby Club supporter throughout her entire life, and always delighted in writing letters to all “her” Fairfield Red Ruggers, which were read by Chris at every one of the Fairfield Rugby Club’s 5 year reunions, until her passing in September 2008. She always lovingly and fondly called her son’s Memorial Rugby Field “God’s Little Acre”, and considered her gift of the Hans Grauert Memorial Field to Fairfield University as the most wonderful decision she made in her life. friendsoffairfieldrugby.org/history/lt-hans-grauert-memorial-field/
