I just read the article you linked to. I didn’t see a Hamas sympathizer among the faculty. It seemed to be an informative evening with a variety of topics of discussion. I’m glad I read the article as I lacked a good understanding of the historical context that predates the Hamas butchery on October 7th. I think you mischaracterized one professor’s presentation as being a Hamas sympathizer, when it seemed to me her goal was to present the conditions that Gazans live in —- differentiating Gazans from the actions of Hamas on October 7th. I believe it’s Dr. Patton that you are referring to as the Hamas sympathizer. From the article: Dr. Patton also attempted to address the “failure of Americans to relate to Palestinian suffering and why have the victims been portrayed as perpetrators, and I’m not referring to Hamas.”Patton went further and expressed that to “accurately” explain Hamas’s attacks on Israel, their actions needed to be contextualized both historically and politically. However, she clarified twice to the audience that “explanation is not a moral justification. Killing civilians is a war crime.”

Columbia Univerity School of Social Work Dean Melissa Begg '85 canceled a planned teach-in designed to spread anti-semitism at the school on 12/4. I could not be prouder of a Fairfield alum taking a stand in the face of such hatred. She is quite the contrast to the Harvard, Penn and MIT Presidents who cowered before Congress today. When asked whether calling for the genocide of Jews was considered harassment and a violation of their student code of conduct, they each stated that it depended on the context of the statement and any related conduct. Shocking.
