The following sent out by FU -
Dear Members of the Fairfield Community,
Over the past weekend, war erupted in the Middle East as Hamas militants launched a military operation against Israel on the Gaza Boarder beginning what is now being called the Israeli-Hamas War. We are shocked and saddened by this recent attack and continued violence in the region. This event impacts members of our community, who have family and friends in the region. As an academic community, we will gather together to learn, join in dialogue, and pray for a quick peaceful settlement. Faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences, in partnership with offices of the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies, Office of Campus Ministry, the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, the Office for the Vice President of Mission and Identity, and the Department of History are organizing an Teach-In to help frame this moment with context and history. Please join us: Community Teach-In and Dialogue: The War Between Hamas & Israel in Context Thursday October 12th at 12:30 Alumni Room in Alumni House Christine Seigel, Provost Richard Greenwald, CAS Dean

This sounds like a woke response - It’s terrorism not a milatary attack on Israel. Harvard and NYU among others have be ripped for their written responses. This is the time, IMO, for a harsh rebuke of Hamas not a whitewashed social justice warrior response. Israel isn’t perfect by any means but the slaughter of innocents is absolutely not acceptable. Here is a hedge fund CEOs response about Harvard - x.com/billackman/status/1711788747086233661?s=46&t=eFzUwwS5wT4SRidcE9hklg

Know a few Ivy alums who are livid at the students and administrators over their responses to the situation - lots of yelling and screaming - a sh-t show behind the scenes. I hope our trustees are weighing in on this so that FU doesn’t have bad press out of this.

It's unnecessary for universities to take public positions on political issues because it's a no-win situation; someone will be offended by whatever pronouncement is made. The University of Chicago still abides by a policy of not making public pronouncements on political issues for this reason. An exception to this rule is justified in my opinion in condemning an incident of clear and undisputed evil, as the attack in Israel was. Saying they were "shocked and saddened" by the slaughter of over 1,000 innocents is a weak and underwhelming response that fails to reflect the grave nature of this crime. Would Fairfield have been "shocked and saddened" by the Holocaust as well? The fact that the leadership of the school can't recognize this is troubling. It also reflects an absence of any Jesuit values or consciousness.

I don’t want to censor them in any way but alway want them to know that others at big schools have screwed up messaging and it will affect the students. The Ivies are yesterday year as far as I am concerned. It’s been building for years. Horrible situation. Terrorist act. Israeli isn’t perfect but is clearly right on this-correct that this is black and white. Based off my opinion/observations of the overall teaching community, they are very left/progressive leaning-at least publicly. Im afraid they will radically view the situation as partly caused by the Israeli imperfection (like a lot of the Ivies and others). No amount of woke or DEI garbage will change the responsibility for this. It’s a shame that there will be some collateral damage but it’s justified to fix this. This is a “just war” - just doesn’t mean it won’t be brutal and ugly.

How have we come to a point where "Teach Ins" and "context" is needed to recognize evil? Who believes that targeting infants and children is a "military operation." Sadly our intellectuals can no longer see anti-semitism if it smacked them upside the head. Of course the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion needs something to keep them busy so there is that. I agree completely with Ghost and Irish that if you can't condemn barbarism don't try to provide context just keep your mouth shut.

The University decided to release a delayed response to the attack on Pearl Harbor as well: “On December 7th, 1941 the Empire of Japan decided to launch a military operation against the United States with limited notice. We have decided not to take sides and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution.”
