Fairfield – URI Early Edition Game Notes ♫ 23-24 - 197
Fairfield University (0-1, 0-0 MAAC) VS University of Rhode Island (1-0, 0-0 ACC)

LAST TIME OUT
Quinten Post scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Boston College defeated Fairfield 89-70 in the season-opening game for both programs Monday night. Post was 11 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Despite the win for Boston College, they were unable to stop many Stags from establishing new DI career scoring highs. Brycen Goodine led the Stags with a career high 22 points. Michael Rogan also established a career high with 18, Peyton Smith had a career high 12, Jasper Floyd had a career high 9 points and Matt Curtis had a career high 2 points. BC was only able to hold two Stags players under their career highs.
In the first 9:06 of the 2nd half, the Eagles offense marched down the field scoring a field goal and 3 touchdowns. The Stags had a field goal of their own but were limited to only one touchdown. After the BC 24-10 run to start the half, Fairfield outscored the Crimson Eagles for the remainder of the game but still came up short when the horn sounded.
SERIES HISTORY
In a series that goes back to 1978, the Stags continue their search for their first victory over the University of Rhode Island. Currently Fairfield is 0-5 versus the Rams which includes a record of 0-1 at home, 0-2 on neutral courts and 0-2 away. The closest games in the series were a 71-69 loss in Providence in 1978 and 59-57 loss at home (Bridgeport) in 2001. In the first of these two point losses, Fairfield faced URI in ECAC tournament with an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line. With the game tied at 69, Sly Williams made a jumper from the left baseline with about 20 seconds left to give the Rams a two-point lead. Fairfield looked to Kim Fisher for the tying basket, but Rhode Island's defensive pressure denied him the shot. The 2nd two point loss came in the Stags debut at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Stags trailed 50-38 with 6:39 remaining. But Fairfield pulled within one with 8.8 seconds left in the game on a 3-pointer by Dan Galvanoni. Fairfield tried to quickly foul but URI wasted 8.4 seconds before Brian Woodward was fouled. Woodward then hit a foul shot to provide the winning margin. Fairfield did managed to hoist a final shot, but Rhode Island's Jason Nickerson blocked Deng Gai's 3-point attempt from the top of the key as time expired. Sam Spann led Fairfield with 16 points. Tyquawn Goode had nine points and six assists for the Stags.
URI BEATS CENTRAL IN THEIR OPENER
Rhode Island opened up its 2023-24 slate with a win, defeating Central Connecticut State 81-70. The Rams utilized a 15-0 run to distance themselves from the visitors and put the game away when they held the opposition scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second half when they jumped to a 70-47 lead.
DOUBLE DIGIT SCORERS
Jaden House was one of four double-digit scorers for URI, joined by Zek Montgomery (20), Brandon Weston (12) and David Fuchs (10). Meanwhile, three stags reached double digits in their opener Goodine(22), Rogan(18) and Smith(12).
HIGH SCORING AFFAIRS
Rhode Island topped 80 points in the opener, something they only accomplished two times last season, scoring 82 in a win over Fordham and 80 in an overtime loss to George Washington. Meanwhile Fairfield broke 70 points, a number they reached only 7 times last season.
STAGS HEAD TO ROAD ISLAND
A sure sign you are in Rhode Island….
ABOUT THE RAMS
In his second season at URI, Archie Miller, while still at the same school, for all practical purposes is coaching a new team The 2023/24 University of Rhode Island (URI) men's basketball team has 11 new players, even more than the Stags who are featuring 10 additions. For URI, not one of the starters from last year is back. That might be a good thing for the program, as the Rams did little winning last year, winning only nine of thirty-one games. Their offense was feeble as they had problems shooting, finishing, and had prolonged scoring droughts, particularly at the end of games (must be a New England thing). The team’s field goal percentage of 39% was the worst in the A-10 Conference, and their three-point shooting percentage of 30.4% was one of the worst in the country(342nd) although Fairfield found a way to be worse with the Stags shooting 28.6% and finishing 360th (another New England thing). This season, expectations are high as Miller and his staff have brought in three players who are capable of shooting 40% from the three-point line and two players who have shot near 60% from close. They have added to the frontcourt two “really tall guys” who are 6’ 9”, and with 6’ 11.” With Jeremy Foumena coming off his redshirt year, they have five players 6’ 9’ or taller and URI will be another team that poses match-up issues for an injury depleted Stags team.

The Backwoods Cartoon
The Backwoods Cartoon was developed by Drue Waldron. Drew started drawing a collection of cartoons on t-shirts and this evolved into 1,200+ finished single panel cartoons. In 2007, The Backwoods Cartoon began running in some newspapers, but a syndication deal was never established. Waldron has published several books and calendars that contain his work.

In order to inflate the size of the US Military, the Boy Scouts were counted as part of the American military until 1986. Meanwhile, Russia, which had banned scouting in 1917, began allowing Scouting units again in 1990, and the Russian government began counting Scouts when reporting the size of their military in 1992.

HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
ALL THE BEST TO THE PIZZA CHEFS
On one of their last days at Fairfield, Coach Johns and his son James decided to make Pizzas for the Fairfield players. The two asked Lex Yetna which pies were better, to which Yetna responded, “Jimmy John’s Pizza was ready “Freaky fast,” but Papa Johns has better ingredients……”
With apologies to James Johns and James Johns, Jr. and best wishes to them both in whatever is next in their life journeys.
ANOTHER FAILED MARKETING CAMPAIGN
Recently, in order to generate fan interest in Rhode Island sports, school officials tried to copy Boston’s successful “Red Sox Nation” marketing campaign and introduced a “URI Nation” promotion. While tickets sales did not seem to increase, evidence suggests that fans used the rest room more frequently following the uri nation promos.
LIFELONG STAGS FAN WAITS FOUR MINUTES INTO SEASON OPENER TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE TEAM
The new season was more than 4 minutes underway before one lifelong Stags fan unleashed his first tirade against Chris Casey and the Stags. “Casey needs to make some substitutions. Doesn’t Chris know he needs to play some zone? The offense is awful, we need better ball movement, and not all these handoffs.” While admittedly never seeing a practice, this lifelong fan knows that, “Chris is starting the wrong guys. He should have started Yetna, Fields, Davidson, Leach and Seck! Even worse, how can Casey allow the concession stands at BC to serve cold coffee? Doesn’t he know the team would play better if they wore different color Jersey’s?”
In a post game interview, Casey deflected questions on most of these topics but admitted he is, “looking into the uniform thing.” Chris expects the team will be in New Jersey before the Fairleigh Dickinson game…….
