SERIES HISTORY
This is the first game in the series between the Fairfield Stags and the Mount Saint Mary’s Knights.
MASCOT MANIA
After conducting exhaustive research, the EEGN staff has determined that the Mascot for Mount Saint Mary’s in Newburgh is not a mountain man named Emmit S. Burg, nor is it the Godess Athena who is associated with another school by the same name. It is “Mack the Knight - Yes, Mack, who is often referred to as the “knife of the party” is the “amazing” mascot for Mount Saint Mary’s(NY). Other than his name, and the fact that he doesn’t have a Bobby Darrin song named after him, little is known about Mack the Knight. So in place of a detailed Mascot intro, EEGN will ask a difficult a Mascot Trivia Question related to 3 of this years opponents:
What do mascots Mack the Knight, Baldwin the Eagle, and Petey the Griffin have in common? (Answer to follow the image)
The Same middle name.
Mascot disclaimer: Mack the Knight is not associated in any way with the McDonalds corporation, Mac Tonight, apple computers, Mack Trucks, Steve Jobs or Jack Sheppard
COOKING WITH TYSON
In honor of Mack the Knight, Tyson shares his recipe for Mac and Cheese

HIGH SCORING AFFAIRS
Fairfield has allowed 89 or more points in both games so far this season. By way of comparison, Fairfield did not allow more than 80 points in a game during the entire 2021-22 season.
GOODine FIRST TWO GAME
Brycene Goodine scored 22 points in each of the first two games this season. In the history of the program only two Stags have averaged at least 22 points per game for a season (Troy Bradford and Tyler Nelson). Here are the top 5 players in season scoring average:
1. Troy Bradford (28) 22.7 1987-88
2. Tyler Nelson (33) 22.2 2017-18
3. George Groom (25) 21.2 1971-72 - 529 Points
Mike Branch (25) 21.2 1963-64 - 529 Points
5. Frank Magaletta (26) 21.0 1969-70
BREAK OUT GAME FOR LOUIE
Louis Bleechmore set a new career high against URI scoring 24 points. It was the first time he ever scored in double digits in his career. He also reached double digits in rebounds for the first time in his career. His previous high of 6 boards came last year versus Sacred Heart. His 12 boards and 24 points resulted in the first double-double of his career.
HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOOTERS
Three Stags are shooting 40% or higher from deep so far this season. They include Michael Rogan, who is 8-12(.667), Brycene Goodine 9-18(500), and Louis Bleechmore 4-10(.400). No Stag with 50 or more attempts averaged over 40% from deep last season, the last player to accomplish this feat was TJ Long(.403) during the 2021-2022 season.
(Editors note: Jack Brown was .500 from deep last year on limited attempts)
TOP STAGS FROM DEEP FOR THE SEASON
While its only two games into the season, BG and MR are both shooting at a rate that would eclipse the Stags all time record for three point shooting percentage. Only two Stags have ever finished a season above 45% with at least 100 attempts (Mike Evanovich .471 2009-10 and Shane Miller .467 1995-96). To qualify as a leader in accordance with official NCAA standards a player must average at least 2.5 made 3 point baskets per game and appear in at least 75% of a teams games. Using this standard only Landon Taliaferro has averaged over 40%(2018-19.4232)
GOOD FROM THE LINE
Louis Bleechmore has been impressive from the line hitting on 90% of his free throw attempts so far this season (9-10).
COMIC OF THE DAY
Cartertoons
Jon Carter began writing and drawing cartoons in the summer of 1989 His work has appeared in a variety of magazines, newspapers and websites.
LOOKING FOR WIN NUMBER 1
Fairfield players are all hoping that they have a good Knight Monday and get their first win.
WORST STARTS
The worst start for any team in Fairfield history occurred in the 1955-56 season when the stags started the year 0-6. In the Division 1 era, Tim O’Toole’s Stags started 0-5 in the 2001-02 season and Ed Cooley duplicated the feat in 2006-07.
SLOWEST STARTS IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Last year Jay Young’s Stags started the season with a 3-7 record. No Fairfield team has finished the first 10 games of the season without at least 2 victories. Fairfield will need to win at least 2 of the next 8 games if they wish to avoid establishing a new futility mark. Here are the other seasons that Fairfield started 2-8 along with the team’s record at the end of each of those seasons.
2-8 Starts
1983-84 (10-18) O’connor
1987-88 (8-20) Buonguoro
1991-92 (8-20) Cormier
2006-07 (13-19) Cooley
2007-08 (14-16) Cooley
2013-14 (7-25) Johnson
2018-19 (9-22) Johnson
It’s interesting to note that no team that started 2-8 finished the season with an above 500 record.
Editors note: Fairfield also started 2-8 during 1949-50 before Fairfield was a division 1 program

TRAINERS CONSIDERING FOOTWEAR CHANGE FOR STAGS
Following another string of injuries this season the training staff is seriously questioning whether the team’s brand of sneakers is contributing to the all the ankle and knee injuries, and if they should get a different brand of sneakers for the team. It seems the medical staff may be doing some sole searching.
FAIRFIELD ANNOUNCES 2024-25 OUT OF CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
Yesterday, Fairfield Men’s Basketball became the first team in the nation to complete its OCC schedule for the 2024-25 season. According to an athletic department spokesperson, “Scheduling can be very difficult, and we are glad we were able to secure 8 exciting OCC contests while completing the schedule especially early this year.” As the Stags continue their pursuit of a 20 win season, next year’s schedule is weighted toward “winnable games” during the out of conference portion of the schedule. Fairfield last lost to a school named Mount Saint Mary’s in 1949, so the staff has placed this program in a prominent position on the schedule. The Stags open with Mount Saint Mary’s(Newburgh, NY), before heading to California for games versus Mount Saint Mary’s(Los Angeles, CA), and Mount Saint Mary’s(Santa Clara, CA).
