I think it’s fairly obvious that basketball is my favorite sport, so I was very pleased to see Tyler Nelson and Bob Heussler chosen for the 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame. I was a bit surprised to see Wayne Gibbons ‘70 be a posthumous selection, figured he was already in the Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a sophomore on Bisaaca’s last team and played on the Lynam coached teams his last two seasons. Gibbons and Frank Magaletta were classmates and the leading scorers on those teams. I had no idea he became a medical doctor after his years at Fairfield.
At the time of his graduation, the late Dr. Wayne Gibbons '70 was one of only 11 1,000-point scorers in Fairfield Men's Basketball history. Despite playing only three varsity seasons – and with no three-point line or shot clock – Gibbons amassed 1,016 points for an average of 13.2 points per game in his career. He racked up many of his points from the free throw line, graduating as the all-time leader in both free throws made (360) and attempted (480) for a career percentage of .750 at the stripe. Gibbons, who still ranks in the top 10 in free throws made and attempted more than 50 years later, also still holds the Fairfield single-game record with a 15-for-15 performance at the line in a win over Vermont in December of 1969. After graduation, Gibbons earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1979. He practiced medicine, including mission trips to Guatemala, Nigeria, and Ghana, for nearly 40 years. Gibbons passed away on July 24, 2019 at the age of 70.fairfieldstags.com/news/2023/12/14/friends-of-fairfield-athletics-fairfield-athletics-announces-hall-of-fame-class-of-2024.aspx
