Ed Cooley showered with boos, vulgar chant after wild student scene in return to Providence
....It turned Saturday’s Providence-Georgetown game at Amica Mutual Pavilion into a hostile atmosphere, where rowdy students shoved each other to the ground when entering the facility and Cooley was greeted by “f–k Ed Cooley” chants during the Friars’ 84-76 win.
“If anything, I should ask Providence College for a bonus check based on the energy that was in here,” Cooley said during his postgame press conference while also thanking Providence officials for his 12-year tenure, “and that’s no lie.”
Providence reportedly had 18 police officers stationed outside the arena, 11 others inside, extra cameras positioned and 54 security officers from a private firm for the game — more than double what the university would use for a regular game, according to CBS Sports......

Providence fans have no class. Fairfield fans gave Big Ed a standing O and a long, loud ovation upon his return to Harbor Yards the season after his departure. I still have issues with Cooley being more interested in negotiating his Providence contract than game planning St. Peter's in the MAAC semis (40-15, remember?). But there's no arguing his contribution to Fairfield men's basketball. Just wish he had left Supreme Cook alone.

I will always like Ed and think highly of him. That said,
1) Cleaning out his desk before we even played the SPC Game, that was a very poor decision. 2) He clearly was more focused on providence then the Fairfield job. Poor decision. 3) He could have recruited a center from any school in the country. Picking a kid from a past school he coached at. Poor decision. 4) Making statements he would never leave providence and then leaving over money after he had gotten an extension and more money from Providence. Poor decision.
I believe Ed is one of the good guys in the game. But no question Ed has made a some suboptimal decisions, statements and taken sub-optimal actions over the years.

This is, unfortunately, true. Most Providence fans dont see their poaching Cooley from us while we were in the midst of our postseason campaign the same as Georgetown doing exactly the same to them last year. I will concede going to another school in the same conference does make it worse, but neither exit was timed well, creating hard feelings each time.

Spot on reindeerfan! Ed is his own worst enemy. He is just awful with goodbyes.

I am an Ed fan and always will be. I don’t excuse the actions of the PC fans. However, u can’t say u want a lifetime contract because you love PC and Providence is your home as Ed often said and then leave abruptly for G-town. When U make that decision you open yourself to criticism.
I think the NIL changed Coach Cooley's thinking as it has with many top line college coaches, but he didn't want to step away. Georgetown will likely provide him with double the NIL money than Providence would to compete in the Big East.

Ed rose above this nonsense with humor and class in his post-game comments. Friar fans are just bitter because Ed had success at PC. Many of us fans felt the same way when he ran off. Money has changed the game. It is absurd what coaches earn, but many go down in flames as quickly as they rise.

If Cooley would have gone to Iona instead of PC I'm sure his return to Harbor Yard would have been different. I think had he gone to a B10 school PC would have treated him differently, G'Town is a major rival.
