Fairfield –Mount Saint Mary’s Early Edition Game Notes ♫ 23-24 - 221
Fairfield University (15-10, 9-5 MAAC) VS Mount Saint Mary’s (11-14, 7-7 MAAC)
Sunday, February 18, 2024, 2:00
Leo D. Mahoney Arena, Fairfield, CT
LAST TIME OUT
Fairfield was just unable to hit the shot needed to get them over the hump and despite a late 6-0 run that pulled the Stags even with Niagara, the Purple Eagles scored the games final two points and escaped Fairfield with a 65-63 victory. Jalen Leach and Alexis Yetna paced the Stags' offense with 14 points apiece. Yetna's 14 points and team-leading nine rebounds both marked his best in each category as a Stag. Caleb Fields scored 13 points, with all of them coming after intermission. Jasper Floyd also netted double figures with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. James Johns Jr. added eight points fueled by a 4-for-4 day at the free throw line, with Birima Seck and Peyton Smith each knocking down one foul shot to cap the scoring.
SERIES HISTORY
The Mount Saint Mary’s series goes all the way back to 1949 (1/3/1949), but despite the long duration of this series, the teams have only faced each other 3 times. The Stags lost the initial contest, but won both games last season after the Mount joined the MAAC.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
>> Mount St. Mary's saw its four-game win streak stopped in a 61-57 loss at Rider on Friday night. The Broncs scored the final six points of the game to earn the win. Jedy Cordilia paced the Mount with 14 points while De'Shayne Montgomery added 11 off the bench.
>> Mount St. Mary's senior guard Dakota Leffew was named the Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week last week. Leffew averaged 20.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals in leading the Mountaineers to wins over Manhattan and Quinnipiac. It was Leffew's second MAAC Player of the Week award this season.
>> The Mount scored 82 points in the win over Manhattan, and 96 points versus Quinnipiac. The later performance was the teams best offensive performance this season, raising the teams scoring average at the start of the week to 73.4 ppg on 46.5 percent from the field. The Mount's 46.5 field goal percentage is the team's highest since the 1989-90 team shot 47.7 percent from the floor.
>> Dakota Leffew scored 20 points in the wins over Quinnipiac for this 12th 20-point game of the season. Leffew leads the conference in the category, Rider's Mervin James has eleven 20-point games, while Fairfield's Jalen Leach and Quinnipiac's Matt Balanc are tied for third with nine each.
TOO EARLY TO LOOK AT THE SEEDINGS?
With the loss to Niagara, the MAAC standing got even tighter as Marist, Niagara and Fairfield are now tied for 2nd in the conference at 9-5. Iona is tied in the loss column, and St. Peter’s is only one game back. Niagara holds the tiebreaker currently against Marist and Fairfield, so the Stags would need to finish a game ahead of Niagara to secure second or end up in a 3 or 4 way tie that included SPU or Rider. Fairfield holds tiebreaker advantages with Rider and SPU via their sweeps of those teams. In simple terms the Stags have become Rider and SPU fans the rest of the way, and Fairfield does not want to see Iona or Niagara win most games. Mathematically, Fairfield stays out of the play in game with 3 wins. The Stags can still finish in the 1 through 8 positions.

FAN FALLS ASLEEP FOR 4 MINUTES DURING MSM/QUINNIPIAC GAME
A long time Mount Saint Mary’s fan fell asleep at the start of their game against Quinnipiac, missing the only good stretch of basketball Mount Saint Mary’s has had in the last 5 years. As tragic as this was, it would have been more tragic if this had happened in the days before games could be replayed on ESPN+. Thanks to the ability to replay games that comes with the ESPN+ broadcasts, the fan may get an opportunity to re-live the amazing 4:43 stretch of basketball when The Mount built a 10 point lead over Quinnipiac if he is willing to pay $10.99 a month and sit through 20 minutes of pregame commercials….
