If it’s not broke why fix it? Right now is a “back against the wall” mentality. Keep that going while players are playing for themselves and their coach. If we take the tag off isn’t the instinctual thought, “whats our future” and takes focus off the task at hand. There is nothing being accomplished by removing it now. Plenty of HS talent out there and transfer portal won’t open for weeks.
Win the regular season, win the tourney then reward the man. And I’m not saying he needs to do both to get it I’m saying let’s get past all that and focus on winning games, which is what he has been doing.
Oh, by the way. Tom Pecora and QU announced a big 4 year extension (basically his last contract since he will be 70 by the end of it) and they haven’t won since, ya’ll want that? I would like to minimize something that can cause more distraction.
Yeah that's probably the best take on how to proceed, especially as you note, the current Quinnipiac situation. But certainly barring any total collapse (such as the Bobcat's example), and even if the Stags don't win the tournament, Casey has done a great job and deserves the chance to get a contract to come back. Only about three weeks to go to find out how this all plays out. Just have to be PATIENT for a little while longer, that's all.

Barring a situation where the wheels come completely off the bus casey will be back next season
I agree, players want it. But by doing it Feb 26th vs March 16th how does that change next year? That is all we should care about with taking tag off is future. To be honest this roster was built June to August last year so we will even have a head start (LOL). As long as we make an announcement right after March Madness we are fine.

I suspect that the administration has communicated to Chris that he'll be back. I have no problem with announcing his return whenever. It could be done today or in three weeks as far as I'm concerned. If it were today, I would not be worried about Fairfield going on a losing jag. Seems silly to blame Quinnipiac's recent collapse on the Pecora announcement. The Bobcats have been living dangerously all season, pulling games out of the fire late in the second half. The law of averages has finally caught up with them.
For most of the season, I've been a proponent of bringing in the hot young assistant -- Luke Murray, Kimani Young, et al. -- to change the culture and bring excitement back to Fairfield basketball. But Chris has been proven to be an excellent coach and an effective ambassador for the basketball program and the university. There's simply no denying what Casey has accomplished this season, and he deserves a chance to recruit here. Yes, he failed to recruit well at Niagara, but the Mahoney Arena isn't a high-school gym in Buffalo. The man has earned a new contract.
I wouldn’t do anything to mess with the vibe right now. If you’re bringing Casey back announcing it after the season ends probably wouldn’t matter compared with doing it sooner.
As for recruiting, style of play and NIL money will be big factors regardless of the coach. Lots of turnover every season. We’ll hit some years out of the park and others won’t work out. You’re not building a program anymore but managing one and melding a team with new key players every season.
I agree 100% about recruiting. Every D1 coach has been turned into a junior college coach having to recruit players that will be around for 1 or 2 years and then gone. As ‘79 indicated , coaches with the skills of managing and melding players every season will be the most successful coaches. Also u can no longer justify giving a coach at the mid- major level a long term contract in order to insure a recruit he will be the coach for the next 4-5 years. Players simply will not be around that long.

I also believe Casey may already be working out the details of a contract with the administration.
Recruiting next year will be a clusterf… for mid-majors with NIL “haves” exploiting the lax system and “have-nots” having to cope with its unfairness. Hopefully, the whole NIL scheme will be legislated into something much more equitable for all schools in another couple seasons. Winning this year will definitely help the Stags getting some good players. Hopefully our NIL $ pool is not too shabby.
He's done a great job and in mind it's getting to the point where you just reward him for the job he's done, regardless... but I would leave some flexibility in terms of buyout/years, if I was Fairfield. Future success looks like it's going to be based hugely around the ability to work NIL and recruit transfers. Casey hasn't had a chance to do that and although I think he has done a great job with this team... especially instilling that confidence in the guys to make plays... take shots... not worry about one mistake... he's likely going to bring in a lot of new players after the season is over and we have no idea how that will go.

Any chance he may not want to come back for some reason?
There is always this chance, or the chance that someone else tries to grab him. But here's what I think. Casey wants a long term home. He knows the conference. He has the chance to possibly retain a core group. Fairfield has some of the best facilities in the conference to try to recruit to. What job is going to be better? Is an a-10 program or Big East school going to want to grab a 58 year old coach with a losing record because he had one really good season? Is a total rebuild at a a-10 going to be better than Fairfield?
Fairfield is good for Casey and Casey is good for Fairfield. I believe both parties at the table are smart enough to realize this. Casey could have a long winning run at Fairfield, as long as the administration makes a fair offer I think Casey would be inclined to accept it. I believe they will make a fair offer. And I think by waiting they likely will be compelled to make a stronger offer if Casey wins the MAAC tournament. It goes both ways. The more the Stags win the better Casey will do in this transaction.

Fairfield is made up of a bunch of transfers. While good players move up, guys with injuries or lacking players time can move down. See goodine, yetna etc. relationships are the key here. Should be looking big east guys not getting pt should get first look. Quinipuac took quality uconn transfer that we should have been on. Kimani and luke not coming to Fairfield but we should be reaching out to luke for transfers. Romogolou is amazing 3 point shooter but gets no run a uconn.
