Fairfield – Marist Early Edition Game Notes ♫ 23-24 - 224
Fairfield University (18-10, 12-5 MAAC) VS Marist (15-10, 10-6 MAAC)
Friday, March 1, 2024, 7:00 PM
Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
LAST TIME OUT
Jalen Leach scored 21 points as Fairfield rolled past Siena 88-64. Leach just missed a double-double adding nine rebounds to go along with his scoring outburst. Brycen Goodine was 4 of 6 shooting, including 3 for 5 from 3-point range, and went 4 for 5 from the line to add 15 points. Caleb Fields had 14 points on 5 of 11 from the floor. In the game, 11 different players scored including Luke Davidson who got his first 2 points as a Stag. Alexis Yetna added 4 points, James Johns, Jr. 2, Matt Curtis 5, Peyton Smith 8 to round out Fairfield's 36 points off the bench. Birima Seck (2), Louie Bleechmore(9) and Jasper Floyd (6) contributed points from the starting line-up. Floyd had an impressive line that included 7 assists 4 steals and 5 rebounds.
BEST NUMBER IN YEARS
The Stags have recorded the most overall wins since going 19-14 in 2015-16 season. Fairfield has not gotten to 20 or more wins since the 2011-12 season
MIXING IT UP
The Stags have used 7 different starting line-ups this season, with 8 different players earning starts.
SERIES HISTORY
Fairfield leads the all-time series over Marist 43-27, with the Stags owning a 16-14 road record. Many of the contests in the series have been close, with 8 of the games going into overtime. Marist holds a 5-3 advantage in these overtime contests. The Stags have won 4 straight and 7 of the last 10 games in the series.
ABOUT THE RED FOXES
Marist’s five game win streak came to an end following a close loss on the road to St. Peters. The Red Foxes played without leading scorer Max Allen who injured his foot during warm-ups for the game. His status for Friday is not yet been announced. Marist is exceptionally strong defensively, that team ranks sixth in the NCAA in scoring defense (61.4 ppg). Marist relies on production from their bench as Marist had had at least one double-digit scorer off the bench in seven straight games before the streak was ended at SPU. Four different players came off the bench to score in double digits in that stretch including Kam Farris, Isaiah Brickner, Jackson Price, and Trace Salton. Javon Cooley & Kam Farris rank among the top 5 in the conference in three-point percentage.
SHOOTER CHEERING ON THE STAGS
Former Marist Mascot shooter was seen at a recent Marist game sporting a stags jersey. Reportedly shooter is still upset about being replaced by Frankie.
TOO EARLY TO LOOK AT THE SEEDINGS?
Everything went the Stags way this past weekend, as St. Peters beat Marist, Mount St. Mary’s beat Iona, and Rider beat Quinnipiac. On Friday night Niagara was upset by Canisius. These games coupled with the Stags wins over Quinnipiac and Siena moved the Stags into first place by a half game. The top of the standings are about as tight as they could be, but the wins by Rider, Marist and Saint Peter’s along with the loss by Niagara, could potential help Fairfield should first place in the conference come down to tiebreakers. Currently, 5 teams are within 2 games of first place in the loss column with only 3 or 4 games remaining for each team. Any of these 5 teams could finish first, and their remain some very unlikely combinations of games where Iona or Rider could be in the mix with multiple teams tying, if they either team wins out. With a win over Marist, Fairfield would mathematically eliminate Rider and Iona from contention for first place. Marist and SPU would also be in a position where they would face unfavorable tiebreakers scenarios with a Stags win. So Fridays game in Poughkeepsie is a critical one.

I saw a Marist Fan with March Madness Teeth at their last home game. He was down to the final four…..
STRANGE NOISE AT FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY BEING INVESTIGATED
During the last 2 months, the silence that for many years had been heard around campus during basketball games has been interrupted by some strange sounds. The noise seems to sound something like clapping, or the words “Stags up” or “Go Stags.” Occasionally people even claim to have heard something that sounds like, “and the Stags take the lead.” Professors have formed a task force to try and better understand what is causing these inexplicable sounds. Professor Jennifer Klug, who is knowledgeable in the field of plate tectonics, stated that these sounds could be caused by sudden shifts in the earth’s crust. Large numbers of people entering Mahoney areas could be placing stress on the underlying terra firma and on the rocks under the building, that could then be resonating under this stress. Physics professor Jonathan Stott, SJ, also believes large crowds could be causing this sound. According to Stott, the high demand for popcorn, and the constantly running popcorn machines, might create noise at a specific pitch that could bounce off the arena walls echoing and concentrating into a crescendo. While the origin of the noise at Mahoney Arena is not completely clear to members of faculty, one long time fan has a less informed theory on the cause. According to this fan, the sound might possibly be created by a strange motion where fans repeatedly bring-together their hands. According to this fan, the sound can be quite resounding and uplifting if everyone in the arena does it at the same time. Reportedly this kind of noise was at one time commonplace at Stags games during the 60's and 70's but until recently this sound had become quite rare. While informed members of the faculty remained worried about these sounds, this uneducated fan remains unconcerned. He believes what we are hearing is the sound of winning. A sound which hasn’t resonated from the rocks or echoed through the arena in a very long time……
With apologies to Dr. Jennifer Klug and Br. Jonathan Stott, SJ

MARCH MADNESS
