Fairfield – Canisius Early Edition Game Notes ♫ 23-24 - 226
Fairfield University (18-11, 12-6 MAAC) VS Canisius (7-11, 12-16 MAAC)
Thursday, March 7, 2024, 7:00 PM
Leo D. Mahoney Arena, Fairfield, CT
LAST TIME OUT
The Stags lost a tough game to Marist by as score of 58-55. Fairfield was lead by Caleb Fields, who posted 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Jalen Leach and Brycen Goodine also reached double digits with 13 and 10 points respectively.
SERIES HISTORY
The Stags lead the all-time series with Canisius 55-41. Fairfield split the series last year, but the Stags won the game earlier this year. Recently Fairfield has had the GG’s number winning 8 of the last 10 versus the Griff’s.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Despite being one of the genuinely good people in the game, Reggie Weatherspoon is considered to be in the hot seat this year after the Golden Griffin’s have underachieved expectations. While they had had some very disappointing losses, they also have some significant wins including an impressive 70-67 win over a very strong St. Bonaventure's team, and a 93-73 drubbing of first place Quinnipiac. While Canisius had not been playing well in January, they have won four of their last six including wins over Iona, Siena, the Mount and Niagara. Part of the improved play by Canisius can be attributed to a line-up change as sophomore Devean Williams moved into the starting line-up in February and scored a career-high 20 points for the Griffs versus the Mount. Since joining the starting line-up, Williams is averaging more than 10 points 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Tre Dinkins (The Dinkins that Ed Koch didn’t call a washroom attendant), leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game and has scored in double figures in each of the team’s last six games, where he is averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game. Frank Mitchell grabbed 9 rebounds last game versus Rider and 14 rebounds in the win over Mount, the 10th time this season he’s been good for 14-or more rebounds in a game. Mitchell leads the MAAC in rebounding with 11.3 average for the season. The trio of Williams, Dinkins and Mitchell are talented, but at times the supporting cast around them has not shown up.
A LOOK AT THE SEEDINGS?
With the loss to Marist, Fairfield no longer controls their own destiny to win the conference. There are still 1024 possible outcomes for this weekend. Sam Federman has done a detailed analysis of all of these possible outcomes, and has demonstrated that the Stags can finish in the 1, 2, 3 or 4 position. Quinnipiac, Fairfield, St Peters and Marist are the only teams still in contention for first. Niagara cannot finish better than second and Rider cannot finish better than 3rd. The entire analysis can be viewed at:
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1b5QhrpcUfs-RZJVD-9OpVdAJbwMzaTuKt94htKWVSgY/edit#gid=0
Incredibly there are actually scenarios where the Stags can finish first even with a loss to Canisius or MSM. But the clearest path for Fairfield to win the conference includes wins in both their games and Quinnipiac losing to St. Peters. Another clear path would be Fairfield and Marist both winning out. To keep this simple, some of the games that would most help Fairfield include :
1) Siena beating Niagara
2) SPU beating Quinnipiac.
3) Marist beating Niagara
4) Marist beating Quinnipiac

CHICAGO SKY TURNS TO SYDNEY JOHNSON TO HELP TURN AROUND FRANCHISE
After a disappointing 8th place finish in 2023, the WNBA’s Chicago Sky have turned to Former Stags Head Basketball Coach Sydney Johnson to help them put their program back on track. A team spokesman complimented Sydney for bringing to Chicago what he calls, “the Fairfield game plan,” an approach which offensively has some similarities to the Princeton offense, but is build around not playing defense or rebounding. Johnson, who is considered a solid offensive coach, also hopes to bring his marketing genius to Chicago to help the Sky address sagging attendance. Johnson has proposed a new nickname for the team, recommending that going forward they should be known as “The Running Doe’s”. He has also suggested that the team’s new slogan should become “The Sky is Bright.” A marketing department spokesman praised Johnson for bringing his creative genius and new ideas to Chicago. According to this program spokesman, when it comes to Sydney’s ability to advance within the WNBA, “The Sky is the limit…..”
With apologies to Sydney Johnson and Best Wishes to him for success in Chicago
