DID YOU KNOW - WITH SJ
Just like the game Monopoly was based on events and places Atlantic City the game Candy Land is based on real life events and locations. Mostly notably, the Gum Drop Mountains are named after the sudden drop at the peak of Gum Mountain in Virginia and the molasses swamp is a reference to the great Boston molasses flood of 1867.
MAAC TOURNAMENTS TO REMEMBER
2021
Fairfield made an impressive run in the 2021 MAAC tournament, winning 3 straight games as the 7th seed before falling to Iona in the championship game. Fairfield overcame 8th seeded Manhattan in overtime before beating the 2nd seed Monmouth and 3rd seed St. Peters on their way to the championship game. Jake Wojcik and Taj Benning were named to the All-tournament team.
2018
Fairfield made an amazing run in the 2018 MAAC tournament, winning 3 straight games as the 6th seed before falling to Iona in the championship game. The Stags run was lead by senior Tyler Nelson. Nelson scored 99 points, second most in tournament history, trailing only Dwayne Archbold's 111 points in the 2002 MAAC tourney. Nelson secured 22 rebounds, 16 assists, 6 steals, 17 3-point baskets, 30 field goals, and 22 free throws on 22-24 shooting (91.6%). Many of these numbers are Fairfield records and/or rank among the top numbers put up by any player in the MAAC tournament history.
2012
Fairfield reached the MAAC tournament finals as the 4 Seed defeating Rider(5) and Iona(1) before falling to Loyola(2) in the finals in Springfield. Rakim Sanders lead the way for Fairfield with 27 rebounds and 53 points.
2010
Fairfield(2) defeated Canisius(7) in the quarterfinal round by a score of 67-57, before besting Niagara(6) 69-63 in the semi finals. Fairfield had a chance to win the Championship game but a shot in the final seconds of regulation rimmed out sending the game into overtime where the Stags fell to Siena(1) 72-65.
2003
Tim O’Toole’s Fairfield Stags(2) defeated Saint Peter’s(8) 68-60 and Siena(3) 67-63 before falling to Manhattan 69-54 in the Championship game. Manhattan’s Luis Flores was named MVP of the tournament.
1997 – MAAC Tournament Champions
The Fairfield Stags entered the MAAC tournament with an 8-18 overall record and 2-12 conference record good enough for last place. The Stags(8) shocked first seeded Iona(1) by a score of 80-71. Fairfield then bested St Peters(4) by a score of 73-61 before downing Canisius(2) in the Championship game 78-72. Fairfield became the first #8 seed to win the MAAC tournament.
1987 - MAAC Tournament Champions
The Stags entered the 1987 MAAC tournament as the 7th seed (11-15) facing heavily favored LaSalle(2). Fairfield easily handled the explorers 75-62 with AJ Wynder and Jeff Gromos each contributing 27 points and Eddie Golden dishing off 10 assists for the first time in his career. Fairfield then rallied from 7 down in the final three minutes to beat Army 65-60 in the MAAC semi-finals. Troy Bradford had 19 points. In the Championship Game Fairfield found themselves trailing Iona 53-35 in the second half with under 15 minutes to play. In one of the greatest comebacks in MAAC tournament history, Fairfield stormed back to tie the game at the buzzer. Tim O'Toole's 2 steals, 2 drawn charges and 6 points played a key role in the comeback while Troy Bradford hit critical shots including a 3 point basket in the final minutes to give Fairfield its first tie. After yielding a bucket to Iona, AJ Wynder hit a pull up jumper as time expired sending the game into overtime. Jeff Gromos hit two key buckets as the Stags again rallied from behind in overtime to win the 1987 MAAC Tournament.
1986 - MAAC Tournament Champions
The number 1 seeded Stags won their first ever MAAC Tournament championship. Fairfield won handily over Manhattan 80-56, but found themselves locked in a tough defensive battle with St. Peter’s in the second round. Jeff Gromos played some of his best basketball in that contest, scoring a game high 15 points, including going 9 of 10 from the line, none of the free throws bigger than the two he hit to break a tie with only 41 seconds remaining leading to a 49-47 Stags victory. In the championship game, Fairfield faced Holy Cross and their scoring phenom Jim McCaffrey. Fairfield played tough defense on McCaffrey holding him to only one point in the first half building a 12-point lead. In the second half McCaffrey was on fire pumping in 24 points, but it was still not enough as Stag scoring leader Tony George had 18 of his game high 27 points in that half, holding off the Crusaders and giving the Stags 67-64 win for the conference title.
HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
MAAC HIRES DYLAN MULVANEY AS SPOKESPERSON TO PROMOTE MAAC TOURNEY
Following the success and attention associated with last years Bud Lite March Madness campaign, the Metro Atlantic Conference marketing team has turned to social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney as their new spokesperson. According to Travis Tellitocci, “with all the discontent surrounding changes about to take place in the conference, the MAAC needs to bring in a big time professional like Dylan to bring people together and to become the face of the conference.” The move by Tellitocci, usurps Mark Nemec’s efforts to make Dylan the next Stags Mascot. According to Nemec, Mulvanni would have been the perfect fit to replace Lucas, as the athletic department could have had their first transgen deer spokesperson.”
Conference officials hope that Dylan will play a key role in drawing attention to, and increasing attendance at, this year’s MAAC tournament. We plan to have special collector beer can’s with Dylan’s picture on it for sale at the MAAC tournament. According to Tellitocci, “if that doesn’t draw fans to Atlantic City, nothing will.” Mulvaney hopes to do for the MAAC what was done for Bud Light. According to Mulvaney, “this won’t be hard to do as so many others have already done their part to destroy the MAAC brand.” If this promotion goes as well as planned, next year MAAC officials plan to replace regular Coke with a special “New Coke” that will be sold Dylan Mulvaney collector cans……
STAGS HEAD TO THE TOURNEY
The Stags head to Atlantic City for the MAAC tournament looking to win the tournament for the 4th time in 42 tries.
