Fairfield University (21-11, 15-5, 1-0 MAAC) VS Marist (18-12, 12-8, 1-0 MAAC)
Friday, March 10, 2023 • approximately 9:00 PM EST following opening game
Atlantic City, NJ
SERIES HISTORY
Fairfield leads the all-time series over Marist 43-28. Many of the contests in the series have been close, with 8 of the games going into overtime. Marist holds a 5-3 advantage in these overtime contests. The Stags have won 6 of the last 10 games in the series
STAGS VERSUS MARIST IN MAAC TOURNAMENT PLAY
The Stags have faced Marist only twice in the conference tournament. The programs have each won one of the head to head matches.
Marist (1-1)
2011 - #1 Fairfield 55, #9 Marist 31
1998 - #8 Marist 74, #9 Fairfield 73 (OT)
MEMORABLE MAAC TOURNAMENT GAMES
Perhaps the most memorable game in the conference tournament between these squads occurred during the 1998 MAAC tournament when Marist(#8) got out of the gates quickly taking a 26-8 lead against the Fairfield(#9) Stags midway through the first half. Fairfield methodologically worked their way back into the game tying the score and taking the game into overtime. Marist however outlasted the Stags, finishing their season with a 74-73 OT victory. In that game Darren Phillip paced the Stags with 28 points, while Leroy Robinson reached double digits with 11 and Chris Rivers added 10.
ABOUT THE RED FOXES
- Marist came from behind to defeat Niagara in the Quarterfinal round of the MAAC tournament last night by a score of 65-59.
- Jaden Collins (20 pts), Javon Cooley (14 pts) and Jackson Price (12 pts) all reached double figures in the win. Collins and Cooley hit key buckets for Marist, with Cooley icing the game with 4 late free throws.
- Max Allen was named second team all-maac. He led Marist in scoring this season at 11.5 points per game. He ranked ninth in the conference in field goal percentage at .522. Allen also ranks third in the team in assists per game (1.9), and he has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (50-44) from the center position. In the regular season, Allen had 15 double-digit scoring games, two with at least 20, and one double-double.
- Josh Pascarelli was named to the MAAC all-rookie team. Pascarelli ranks in the conference's top 10 in both three-point percentage (.385, seventh), and three-pointers per game (2.1, eighth). He is second on the Red Foxes in scoring at 10.9 points per game. Pascarelli leads the team in double-figure scoring games with 16, and he has a team-best four contests in which he scored at least 20 points.

GETTING THE STAGS ROLLING
The Stags have won 14 quarterfinal games, and of those 14 contests, the team has gone on to appear in the championship game 8 times winning 3 titles (1986, 1987, and 1997).
THE JERSEY’S MATTER
According to Twitter (Source: Fairfield Frank) the Stags are 9-3 when wearing the home whites, 6-3 in the away Reds, and 6-5 in the Black Uniforms (worn home and away).
REGULAR SEASON MEANS LITTLE?
It is said that it is hard to beat a team 3 times and in the MAAC conference this has certainly proved to be the case. Fairfield has faced an opponent in MAAC tournament play 39 times where they were either 0-2 or 2-0 versus the opponent in the regular season. The result of 14 of these contests or 56% have been an upset. The Stags continued that trend yesterday beating Iona who they had gone 0-2 against during the regular season.
MAAC STANDINGS
1, 2, 3 AND 5 SEED ADVANCE
The number 4 seed Rider gets knocked out of the semi-finals as the 1, 2, 3 and 5 Seed advance. The last time the 1,2,3 4 teams appeared in the semifinals was 2017.
JUGGLING THE LINE-UP
The Stags used their ninth different starting line-up this season as Floyd, Fields, Leach, Bleechmore and Yetna got the start versus Iona.
TRIVIA QUESTION
Fairfield shot 82% from the free throw line last night, one of the teams best efforts from the line in the MAAC tournament. However the Stags had an even better night from the line going 21-22 in a prior MAAC tourney game. Can you name the season and the opponent?

TRIVIA ANSWER

Jimmy Patsos buys a Courtside Seat the To Continue Arguing Foul Call From 2015 MAAC tournament
Jimmy Patsos, still sore following a foul called in the quarterfinals of 2015 MAAC tournament that ultimately allowed Iona to defeat Siena by 3 points, has indicated he plans to buy courtside seats to this years tournament so that he can continue to argue the call with Mike Kitts. While all indications are that Mike Kitts, Sr. retired in 2020, Jimmy still plans to keep up the fight, if necessary, by arguing with Mike Kitts, Jr. or for that matter any officials who happen to be in the arena. According to Patsos, “We got shafted worse than an elevator.” If that quote isn’t cringeworthy enough, Patsos says he plans to lay on the refs all of his old favorites like:
“Stevie Wonder could have made that call….”
“If you had one more eye, you'd be a cyclops.”
“Check you cell phone, you’ve had 14 missed calls……”
"Come on ref, OJ Simpson made less contact!"
“Hey ref, you missed a great game….”
Patsos, who hold the MAAC record for most ejections in a career, says he only argues with game officials when it is “absolutely necessary.” According to Patsos, “I never argued with the even numbered referees. I only argued with the other ones because it seems the odds were against me.” Patsos is hoping that the MAAC will employ his wife as a referee, for this year’s tournament. According to Jimmy, “that's my best hope of finding someone who wants to argue with me about something that happened 9 years ago……”
With apologies to odd refs and women everywhere……
The Early Edition Team wishes The Stags the Best of Luck as they try to bring home the championship for the first time in 27 years.
