2024 Recruit: Sergei Szpektor
Sergei Szpektor is currently playing in Alaska. He has mentioned the Stags/Fairfield as one of the only schools recruiting him.
Player Profile: Szpektor, Sergei
Hometown: Moose Pass, Alaska
Position: Center
Height: 7’3”
Weight: 240 lbs
Considering: Fairfield University, Morse State
2024 Recruit, Expected to Qualify
Sergei Szpektor is an Alaskan born basketball player of Russian ancestry who is a qualified 2024 recruit. Sergei is better known as “Sergei Spector - the Rim Protector” or “Serge Protector” for short, but this Nickname is the only short thing associated with Sergei. Standing at 7’3” Serge is the tallest person to ever play high school ball in Alaska. Currently he plays for Mt. Edgecumbe (www.mehs.us/athletics___activities/sports/basketball/boys_basketball ) a perennial powerhouse in Alaska Basketball who went a perfect 24-0 in the regular season. Serge also played on a very successful AAU team, the Moose Pass Caribou, one of the top AAU programs in Moose Pass.
Serge is considered by some to be a project and “one dimensional” / "strictly a shot blocker," but he still set numerous state records this season. These included: most blocks shots in a game (23 vs. Dillingham), most rebounds in a game (35) (including 11 rebounds and 10 shots on a single possession), most turnovers in a game, fastest player to foul out (4 min 33 seconds) and most consecutive missed free throws (33). According to Serge, “I will need to work on my foul shooting when I get to college. In my mind there is nothing free about free throws.” Here are some other memorable quotes from “the Serge Protector”:
When asked why he missed the game versus Buckland.
I think I was grounded.
When asked about his abilities
You can sum up my game in just two words: "Great Shot Blocker.
On his ability to score
When I catch a pass I’ve been called Mr. Instant offense because I can dunk but because of my turnovers, I’m instant offense, on both ends of the floor.
On other topics:
I don’t think chemistry is important. Yeah teammates need to get along but Chemistry is like a class you take in high school that explains something like the letter H plus Two plus Zero equals water.
“Some things about basketball I just don’t question. Like why they call so many fouls on me and why there is always a big number in the TO column whenever I play. I mean, I never call time-out, but last game they had me down for 9 TO’s. Strange…”
"My shooting has improved as the season progresses; I shot 100% in my last game, 70% from the floor and 30% from the free throw line"
"Ball handling and dribbling are my strongest weaknesses"
“I had 7 blocks versus the Baluga’s that’s exactly double of what I had versus Nome.”
"Apart from Nome’s 24 fields goals, we held them scoreless in the first half."
"We’ve been called the second-best team in the State, and there's no higher praise than that."
When asked about what school’s he might like to play for Serge said “Yukon” was his top choice. But since he hasn’t heard boo from the folks in Storrs, and he likes Huskies, he could also see himself playing for Northeastern, Northern Illinois or UAW. According to Sergei, “I could bring to the program my own husky.” Despite having the size and speed to be a difference maker, Serge is a virtual unknown on the recruiting sites and has only received stated interest from two schools: Fairfield and Morse. Because of his aversion to Walruses, he has already ruled out Morse, so it seems the Stags are the front runners. According to Serge, “I think I would fit in at Fairfield because I'm so deer like. In fact, I consider myself to be my team's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. If I'm not ready, the sled isn't going to go.” While he would prefer to become a Reindeer, Caribou or Moose, Serge seems likely to settle for being a Stag next season…..
I hope that “Serge Protector” doesn't end up joining the lengthy list of early April recruits that have not ultimately signed with the Stags…….
Enjoy today and every day......
