Was worried about this…. However, the way the portal is set up, why wouldn’t you test the market? I guess there is a repercussion of finding no team and your team not taking you back, but how often does that happen?
A big school will offer $100k to a backup, or even a backup to a backup. So Jasper’s going to get more money than he would here. Downside risk is he’s not guaranteed PT or the opportunity to expand his scoring and show he can make 3s, which he’ll need to get a decent pro look.
Well, we’re quickly going to find out if Casey can recruit. Before Floyd put his name in the portal, we were solid at PG and center plus we had a few other pieces. Excellent PGs are so difficult to find. We saw in the ‘23 season what happens when you have good talent but no true PG. Hoping Casey and the staff are able to put together a roster that’ll allow us to compete for the championship in the MAAC tournament.
Recruiting impact players is year to year. Casey will be offering PT, an open offense and great numbers from our last group of guards. They’ll be some NIL too. Last season, our guards were excellent players and people. Need to have both when you’re assembling a new squad overnight. And that’s tough. Culture matters or things fall apart fast — see Siena. Only upside is a bad recruiting year can be overcome a season later.

This mess is a reflection of our society in general.
The powers in charge (and even that is open to question) will continue to tweak this rule or that rule in order to make the NIL debacle appear more fair. It won’t work. There needs to be full disclosure accounting of NIL monies and then divide schools into the rich ones and the poorer ones. Keep them separate with two different championship tournaments.
Yes, the feds could intervene, but with the strength of lobbyists and government corruption, it won’t change.
As soon as Floyd became a dad, I knew he was gone. Who wouldn’t do what is best for their family?
The schools really started this whole mess when they started selling team merchandise as a profit center. Some even started opening shops in malls, etc. Their mission should have strictly been education. Maybe NEC 2.0 isn’t so bad if we retain our innocence.
At this point I would rather watch semi-pro, minor league basketball teams whose players are not in it for an education than watch these arrogant high majors flaunt the system and stick it to all the lower tier schools.

And UConn rakes in millions in revenue from team merchandise and will continue to do so. For CT residents, aren’t you proud what your tax dollars are supporting? Greed and a relentless push for more and more. Seeing UConn gear on people at the Mahoney makes me sick

Goodine too as far as being a new dad and looking out for the family. So certainly there should be an understanding of this decision by Floyd (IMO) even though of course we are all disappointed that it has come down to this. So we turn the page for next year as far as trying to replace our roster with a lot riding on how the newly opened PG position is restocked. But the only good news is that regarding our direct competition, most will have similar problems in this area. I'd like to think the success of this past season will play a part in helping the Stags restock better than most of the others in that regard. TBD of course, but the next two-three months or so are going to be nerve-racking for sure. Anyway good luck to Jasper who was not only a good and important player, but also a good person too. He will be missed.
That's the goal. Squeeze out the mid majors, just as the NCAA did when they MANDATED that if your school had a Division 1 basketball program, their football must be D 1, as well. This caused scores of schools to eliminate, what was, Division 1 AA football. Now, with rare exception, you have 3 levels of athletic programs: BIG TIME Basketball and Football, Big Time Basketball with small time football (not a big number), and Mid Major Basketball with small time or no football. Does anyone think that the Big East getting only 3 NCAA bids wasn't a nod to the Big Football Conferences? Does anyone believe that Mountain West Basketball is better than Big East Basketball? UCONN is the outlier, but they sold out their basketball for football, saw the error of their ways, and headed back to the Big East. IMO, FF MUST move up or they will end up stuck with the low mid majors that will eventually morph into D 3 style programs. FF has the money, the academics, the facilities, and now MUST parley that into a move up and the sooner the better.
