The college season officially opens on Friday night and six of the MAAC teams are involved. League home teams are Rider (Robert Morris), Siena (Vermont), Loyola (Binghamton), Iona (Denver), and Marist (Stony Brook). Away is St. Peter's @ Rutgers. While there are obviously many unkowns about all the teams, especially those OOC, I do think given the fact that the league is home in five of them, they really should win a minimum of three of these with a possibility of five, with the almost sure loss going to the Peacocks against the Scarlet Knights. Probably Loyola is almost a sure bet against a Binghampton team that is picked near the bottom of their league. Of the other four, I think they are all tough matchups. But again, the home court advantage should help. But anyway, I can't wait much longer. Let the season begin!
Pomeroy site has the MAAC winning 4 games from each teams openers:
Iona 11/9, vs 82 Denver (W, 69-67, 58%) Loyola MD 11/9, vs 346 Binghamton(W, 74-52, 98%) Manhattan 11/11, at 8 Louisville (L, 77-61, 8%) Fairfield 11/10, vs 208 Central Connecticut(W, 66-62, 66%) Niagara 11/9, at 68 Oregon St. (L, 81-71, 21%) Marist 11/9, vs 165 Stony Brook(W, 66-62, 63%) Siena 11/9, vs 127 Vermont (L, 63-61, 45%) Rider 11/9, vs 84 Robert Morris(L, 70-65, 32%) St. Peter's 11/9, at 52 Rutgers (L, 72-55, 7%) Canisius 11/12, vs 213 Boston University (L, 65-64, 49%)
He also says we have 66% chance of beating Central CT, with a final score 66-62. I think either Siena or Canisius will win too..... for the MAAC going 5-5

St. Peter's, picked last, beats Rutgers. Rider, picked seventh, beats Robert Morris. Chalk one up for the idea that it's a tough league, top to bottom. Oh, and Iona proved it could hold a 25 point lead, barely this time!
Manhattan has the best player in the league in Beaman. Iona has the best duo in Momo and Armand, Loyola the best trio on Etherly, olson and Cormier, but we have the best 5-some....... Wade, Needham, Nickerson, Barrow, Matthews.
For all the talk of JUCO's and Frosh, none made an impact..... and they won't until maybe the 2nd half of the season. Division I transfers came up big. Rider's Nurideen Linsay is a player. Siena is better that they showed..... some injuries and Pot Smokers are doing Mitch in.
Transfer from Delaware State, Desi Washington, looks to be a great find for St Peters. And wait to we see Billy Baron of Canisius play. I am glad we play defense to stop all these guys..... cause we are surely not going to think we can consistenly beat them with our offense.
The MAAC coaches in their preseason poll picked St. Peter's for last place. Since they won at Rutgers, should I begin to feel more optimistic about our chances against DePaul and Virginia?
