The other Portal thread will be jammed with players listing Fairfield as a school that has contacted them and who’s been on campus for a visit, etc. so I’m starting this thread for what’s going on with the portal for the other MAAC schools. The school which seems to be doing quite well is Quinnipiac simply by players announcing they’re not entering the portal (Tice) or entering the portal (Savion Lewis) and less than one week later announcing he’s staying at Quinnipiac. They’ve also announced three prep commitments, two forwards (6’8” and 6’9”) and a guard whose dad is the head coach at East Catholic HS in Connecticut.
I don’t get it. Usually, their attendance at basketball games is not very good. They’re second fiddle to the men’s hockey team in terms of student support. Tice was receiving interest even though he hadn’t put his name in the portal. Lewis was 4th in D1 in assists per game and in less than a week, during the dead period no less, he decides to stay another year in Hamden. They are two very talented players. I doubt QU’s NIL$$$ is better than ours or Siena’s. Can anyone offer an explanation for why Quinnipiac is retaining their talented players while virtually every other MAAC team is seeing their top undergraduate talent head to the portal.
A further source of confusion. Last offseason, Baker Dunleavy leaves QU to be co-ordinator of NIL for Villanova men’s and women’s basketball. Pecora must be some sort of a magician to be keeping players at QU.
Mitchell from Canisius has also transferred, to Minnesota.
I expect Staveskie to be an immediate impact guard in the Horizon. I am surprised he did not get scooped by a southern school with greater budget/ basketball prowess who are looking for an experienced guard. His family now will be able to easily attend games however, as he is from Ohio.
Apparently Rider has added some guards through the portal, so Corey feels that he might not be getting as much playing time next season as he thinks he deserves. Been seeing this with several players in the last few weeks. A team will add a player via the portal only to have some other player on the roster decide he’d better go portaling since his playing time will likely be reduced with the new player on the roster. Only a couple more days and coaches will be able to fill out their rosters without losing a player to the portal that he thought was going to be on next year’s roster.
Tajae Jones is 6’8”, played for Long Island Lutheran.
