Tomorrow's mail today. Sydney Johnson's Coach's Update Letter from FRIENDS OF FAIRFIELD BASKETBALL:
November 10, 2012
Dear Friends,
The sounds of basketball once again resonate through the Walsh Athletic Center as squeaking sneakers and bouncing balls echo up and down the hallways of the building. The start of any basketball season offers coaches, student-athletes, and fans a great deal of promise and hope. The 2012-13 season is also filled with anticipation and aspiration for a championship, a goal that always tops the list of any competitor.
While our season is upon us, our thoughts are with our alumni, friends, and fans who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. We pray recovery will come swiftly and with as little hardship as possible for you and your families.
Our men's basketball team shows its commitment and dedication each day we are on the court, two traits that can carry us a long way with this group of young men. We have strong senior leadership in Derek Needham, Colin Nickerson, and Desmond Wade. Derek and Colin have helped this program achieve unprecedented success with three straight 20-win seasons and three consecutive postseason tournament berths. Desmond has been a successful leader throughout his career and demonstrated those traits last season when injuries took their toll on the roster.
Many of you saw the emergence of juniors Maurice Barrow and Keith Matthews last season, two student-athletes who showed that they could become a formidable front court this year. And, we remain hopeful that 7-foot sophomore Vince Van Nes will take the court after battling foot injuries last season.
I am also proud of our freshman class that includes five young men who are ready to have an impact on the 2012-13 season. Marcus Gilbert, Justin Jenkins, Coleman Johnson, Josip Mikulic, and Amadou Sidibe have made great strides during September workouts and continue to grow as college basketball players in preseason practices.
We will need all of our student-athletes to play to their full ability and remain healthy as we face another challenging schedule. After opening the season against Central Connecticut in the Connecticut 6 Classic, we will face the University of Virginia in the first of four NIT Tip Off Tournament games. The team will also face Providence and DePaul during the month of November. Our first home game will also be the MAAC opener as we host Canisius College on December 7 at Webster Bank Arena.
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming game. I know the Fairfield faithful will be behind us again this year as we battle the best in the region and the nation. And as always, I thank you for your support throughout the season.
Sincerely,
Sydney Johnson,
Head Men's Basketball Coach
