Kid's got a sweet stroke. Great "catch and shoot" shooter. He has to get stronger, but overall I like what I see. We have been complaining about the lack of outside shooting on this board for quite awhile. Seems like Syd has a plan with Smith and now Degnan and Nelson on board, to go with our Bigs.
Tyler Nelson has really exploded since the end of his HS season. Here are 2 of his lastest Videos. He can really shoot.. He also looks like he has some length, so I would expect him to grow and Fill out. Right now he looks like a 2G.

Looks like Coach Wheeler was instrumental in the Nelson commitment.
Michael Abelson (@mikeabelson4324) 8/26/13, 11:46 PM Great get for @tysboogie21 and Fairfield hoops today with a commitment from Tyler Nelson. Has the skill to be a top shooter in the MAAC.

I am totally jazzed about landing a kid that is a 46.8% three point shooter. To me, he sounds like a get. At the same time, I have to wonder about this statement in one of the articlas " he as being pursued by Binghamton, Dartmouth and Fairfield?" Seems like he must have some shortcoming, lack of speed, lack of defense, or something or he would have been getting recruited higher. I don't know anything about this kid and I love that we got a great shooter but I wonder if anyone might have thoughts as to why he wasn't getting a lot of higher looks.

RF, He did get higher offers (GW and Vermont), its just that the Higher offers were not part of his final 3. A refreshing thought that someone might not go to a school that is considered a "better offer". My thinking is that Nelson is a MVS type of player.
This summer, playing for Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC), Nelson picked up offers from Jacksonville, George Washington, Vermont, Fairfield and Binghamton. Dartmouth offered him in January. He narrowed his choices down to Fairfield, Binghamton, and Dartmouth, and ultimately chose the Stags.

Also RF I think I read where he shot 89% from free throw line last year (wow)! But I, like you, do share some of your concerns about the rest of his game. But when you think of it, how many players at this level come in with some faults to their game? Many I would say, otherwise they would go to a big time school. The reason that I am excited about this kid is that I think he will fit in very well with the system that Sydney wants to run. Will the obvious ability to shoot the ball combined with the work ethic to improve on some other weaknesses lead to an effective player for the Stags (think MVS), or will it not work out well? Who knows, but I think at this point you have to trust Sydney because of the job he did in putting together his NCAA tournament team when he was at Princeton.

Nashville: You can get away with having a lot of flaws in your game if you can shoot 80% from the foul line and 45% from beyond the arc. I am very excited to get a player like this, one player like this on our team any of the past 4 years could have helped us achieve much better results. He's also 6'2", it seems most of the time when we do land a player that can shoot, they are very small (5'10") but I don't consider a 6'2" guard as undersized.
So I am excited about this get and perhaps you are right. Given that he was down to dartmouth and Fairfield maybe he placed getting a good education high on his list. We'll find out what he has next season but I certainly am glad to see us land a high percentage shooter /effiecent offense player like this.

New England Recruiting website has just updated its high school rankings, and for what it's worth, they list Nelson as #8 in Mass. and #22 in New England at the current time. And this includes players from All schools in NE (public, private and Prep).
SUPER TEAM G - Tyler Nelson, Sr., Central Catholic He may very well be New England's best shooter, and Nelson will be plenty motivated after falling up short in the Division 1 North tournament two years in a row.

Anyone remember Bernie Cieplicki? Only played one season for the Stags, but he lit up UConn for 5 of 8 from three-point range. He also went ballistic on the Kurt Thomas/Billu Tubbs TCU team, nearly leading the Stags to a huge upset.
Bernie was also a shooter of limited athleticism and strength, but man if he got even an inch of space, he could get a shot off and there was about a 50-50 chance it was going in.
