Think of what happens after next year if we don't recruit a big man for next year. Half the team will be gone including our entire front line with the exception of Degnan. We will still have a bunch of guards however including Rome, Tyler, Tommy, Chappell and Rose. How good do you think we'll be then starting from scratch?
Ive been following Stags hoops as a die hard since 1970. Lots of frustrations and ups and downs. High aspirations for SJ coming in. He seemed to be a good choice following a great choice in Cooley. The school was willing to pay up to get him and NO-ONE objected. Disappointed and concerned now. Everyone is, including the entire administration. But, you guys are big talkers and someone should push back.
Its an embarrassing disgrace that you guys are suggesting that Nelson leave or that Nolan is doing the school favor, or frankly that an entire board and administration are clueless. FU may have made a mistake on SJ, but it is understandable and complicated. And it will get fixed. Would you rather send your kid to Iona? Really? You think you are experts on issues that you are obviously naive about. Express your concerns and issues, but if you don't believe in the school, or you changed your mind on Fairfield because of a coaching mistake, go follow Iona or St Peters.
What do you macho, infallible, highly successful leaders actually do? Do you give money to the school?
BTW, anyone who doesn't realize that Joey D was the point guard and Fisher was the 2, doesn't know hoops.
Stagmania, thanks for sending me to bed without my supper. I am actually on Reunion committee since you asked. This is what happens when passionate fans blog and you should be more concerned that there will be less passionate fans due to the current debacle called FU hoops.
Take your soapbox with you when you sign out tonight.

I hope you don't get too stressed out over the run-on committee. Ill keep an eye out to see if the beer was cold and food hot. If not i will get some passionate alumni to rip you apart for letting happen. You have been on a soapbox on a web site quite a bit.
Didn't say you have to give money. You guys are very aggressive, and I wondered if you were on the front lines somewhere with the ability and experience to put it out there and take the heat. Not a requirement just an important factor in how seriously to take your comments.
Its interesting to me how sensitive many of you are. You feel free to slay anyone you choose: trustees, admin, coaches, ADs. Call them idiots, losers, incompetents. Fine. Can anyone disagree with you? I disagree that Nolan is doing the school a favor. I disagree that Nelson should transfer, and that the administration is clueless.
I actually thought this was one of the more tame, reasonable postings. I appreciate the loyalty, and I, too, believe that the Administration will do the right thing this weekend. If not, then you'll see some unruly posts
Stagmania, I never said "Clueless" and I like Mark and Mr. Doris...said respectful things. I am sure Sydney is a nice man. That said, this is a business and we're failing. So this program is a disaster and those who see the other 300+ Division Schools can see that we're a bottom feeder now. We are not doing well and we need changes if we want to stay relevant.
Your Self-righteous BS is just to make yourself feel better...hope it does. Bottom line, we care and most FU alums are apathetic. Yes, I donate what I can working for a non-profit. Yes, I attend games where I can since I live in MD. I am not anonymous. I will happily give you my email or phone if you want to contact me directly. My account is open for you to respond.
74, I never saw Threatt or Degnan play in high school or JC, all I know about them is how highly touted they were just like everyone else did.
On the other hand, I've seen Nolan play most home games and some away games for the past 3 years. Last year when he was a Junior I was wishing that some day he'd be a Stag, and I was very excited when I heard that was to become a reality. Watching him grow and excel on the court is much different than just hearing how good someone has been.
I believe that due to the lack of available scholarships for next year that they came to a mutual agreement to focus on academics, less pressure, getting stronger, etc. and thus the redshirt decision. I don't know that is in cement and hoping not, much is in flux now as you well know.
I've always believed Nolan redshirting is completely a PR move. My opinion is this has been stated because 1) Sydney wants to continue recruiting and needs to be able to say he has a scholarship left 2) The school can't effectively publicly state they have plans to run a player out of town.
I think at the end of the year, someone leaves the program, likely because they are unhappy with playing time, roles, etc. When that happens I suspect a scholarship would be available for Nolan. I am optimistically thinking he plays next season.
Wow, someone got quiet. Bottom line, most of us just need to see what is happening at other schools to comprehend that we're in a bad place as a hoops program. Good people at the University, sure. Tough decisions to be made, Yep. Can we afford a further downtick in the program, attendance, and recognition of our alma mater ,nope.
sports fans recruits, player potential, line ups, starters - - all good stuff. however, years of failure, bad decisions, lack of progress, negative vibes, declining attendance, and a perception of doom, can not be overlooked. it is not about a big man, a small man, or a point guard, it is about the administration doing the right thing with the program. it is to good, to important, and has been part of the landscape of the school for to long, to just let it rot on the vine.
to red shirt a student player like tom nolan would just be another, yes, another, in the long line of never ending mistakes.
