It seems like if they are going to retain Sydney they would need to make a public showing of support and say they believe in him and he's here to stay through 2019. That would be the only sensible way to keep him and allow him to recruit program changers. Otherwise why bring him back as a lame duck coach? If they are serious about Sydney, it seems like that very well may be plausible.
To me, Sydney has coached his way into his current situation. I think the Jesuit fathers would likely remove FVA from his Presidency if he allowed a public showing of support for Sydney with the statement that Sydney is going to remain as head coach through 2019 regardless of the team's play next season.
I doubt that any announcement or quote will say "regardless of the team's play next season". I would hope it would say that they are "committed" to Sydney ..... as StagThomas suggested.
So Joe, you seem to indicate in your post that there will be a total of 4 scholarships available, is that correct. Does that mean that Rose and Chappell are leaving in addition to Threatt and Stevie J? You know I've been pushing all along to get Nolan to start playing right away next season.
My guess we will have 3-4 scholarships. We have 1 open scholarship, Threatt is a 2nd open one. And 1-2 players will move on, but thats just a guess. I don't have any specific knowledge of who will move on.

It's the only rational way to make sense of this irrationality. Unless we have Greg Nero's knocking on our door who would go to Fairfield no matter what the circumstance, the administration needs to commit to Sydney. Otherwise how can he possibly go to a recruits house and look the parents in the eye and have the recruit commit to him if he wasn't going to be there for the long run? There's no sale without a commitment.
I'm sure Sydney believes he will coach Fairfield to a MAAC championship next season and all the rancor on this board will change to admiration for his perseverance and success by sticking to his principles. So he's convinced he is making a long term commitment to these recruits. I'm not so sure that many on this board have the same belief that Sydney will take the Stags to a MAAC title next season as Sydney probably has of his own ability.
We'll just have to wait and see how '15-'16 plays out.
The answer is.....get rid of SJ...........he is the ship and it ain't getting righted with him at the helm.....forget about transfers and recruits until he is gone.
Sydney should be more short-term focused. Every year there are holes to fix, and teams get those type of players..... and they are critical to the teams success. We have not recruited any 5th year seniors, the only player that was close to that was Rakim Sanders.
Sydney may feel he loses his job if he doesn't win next season. For this reason he is very short term focused. To some extent he should be but not at the cost of getting a transfer over talking a freshman who might be a 4 year impact player

The only "big man" on the team that won't be a senior next year is Kevin Degnan. With Kirkland, Gilbert, Johnson, and Sidibe all set to graduate, it would be a great time to add a transfer big man that could step in after next year. Other than that I'm just hoping for talent...but with this coaching staff I'm not expecting it.

I kind of think the opposite. I think if you go after a big it needs to be freshman who can play for the following three years after Johnson, Gilbert and Sidibe graduate.

How about working with Degnan? I think with the right coaching and conditioning he can be a decent MAAC big man. He seems to have a great sense and vision on the court. Has made some freshman passes, gets lost in the flow of the game on offense and needs some direction on defense, but I wouldn't give up on him. His shortcomings are all teachable. He is slow, but he can have a role on this team.
Put him in the right hands and I think we have a good MAAC player.
paulie74, you hit the nail on the head, perhaps degnan can be a good MAAC player with the proper coaching. I have my doubts. However the "good hands people" are at Allstate not at fairfield.

What little we have seen of Degnan was not that impressive. Still I put a lot of stock in Nashville's assessment of Degnan. He saw him play in high school and he says he could do a lot of things we haven't seen so far at Fairfield. Perhaps as Degnan gets comfortable and adjusts to the speed of the college game we will start to see what he can do. I certainly think he will need to be a key player come his junior season, and he needs to be prepared to take on that role.

I agree that Degnan can and needs to be a big piece in two years. However we'll still need 2 more bigs to pair with him in 2 years. If we don't get someone now, we'll be relying on freshmen. How else are we going to get to 8 wins?!
