"The Iona College community has embraced my family and I as one of their own and I thank them for it," said Cluess, who led the Gaels to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013.
Cluess has compiled a 118-54 record during his stint at Iona.
Fairfield take note. That's how you do a contract extension.

Yeah, but the guy from Princeton wouldn't have made the grammar error.

Did anyone here Roy Williams speak last night after the games? Both in the press conference and afterwards in the hallway he did a report where he said he was so proud of these boys, and that theres a special relationship for players and coaches and was so proud to have coached these kids and took all the blame, saying as a coach he wished he could have taken them further. And quote "I wouldn't trade my boys for the world"
I think its apparent Sid would trade all of his for a few more years on an extension.
I don't remember if it was Kenny the Jet Smith or Jalen Rose last night who spoke about a coach and the player relationship. Saying at the college level its different. These coaches have to recruit from the family first, and come into someones house and say give me your son for 4 years and I will protect them and mold them through their time at the school.
Sid promises this, then dumps them on the side of the road when stuff doesn't go right.
Hearing these guys talk, and then seeing whats unfolded at Fairfield really leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.
Sorry, no comparison. UNC recruits at the top of the food chain. Mid-majors do not. Stags roster does not turn over any more than average for the conference. You can look it up.

Technically you may be correct. The number of transfers from Fairfield is on par with other MAAC schools and actually better than at least one MAAC school (Monmouth). However their are two ways to look at turnover. There is turnover of kids that leave a program because they want to get closer to home, have a sick grandmother (put that in their for you Bridgeports), don't like the school, or are disappointed with playing time. The second kind of turnover is a result of kids being told to transfer / i.e. their scholarships are not being renewed. The concern is that Fairfield has too much of type 2 turnover. And if you look at that number since sid arrived, I believe you will find it is higher than other MAAC schools and significantly higher than what you have seen at Fairfield over the last 20 years.
Not trying to be smart but technically is the only way to look at it. We can only infer why kids leave other schools. The numbers are the numbers. I'm sure the reasons are similar everywhere. And this is the way it is now for mid majors. Take a look at a school like Southern Illinois and the like. Roster turnover is becoming the norm whether we like it or not.

Our guys are transferring/being run off because of the failures of the coach - SJ is really the first coach at FU to have a high number of transfers of his guys. IMO, you get a pass for a year or so, then it's not right.
Thank you ghostman. I'm glad you stick up fir these kids . Find a coach that helps to build men and character and you will find you will develop wins as well. This coach does neither .and says anything to a player and parent to get these kids . He represents what's wrong in sports.

I was also pointing in the first portion of my statement to how Sid handled the press conference. Instead of saying they sucked as leaders, he could have said he loved his boys as well and that he didn't do his job as a coach.... I guess that statement isn't relevant though either? Only for coaches who make the sweet 16 I guess...
The amount of transfers has tripled ever since the Grandmother rule was instituted, so all schools numbers have been going up. So no surprise that are numbers are higher. Its also no surprise that when a new coach comes in, there is more turnover. And since we have made mistakes in our recruiting, the obvious solution is to not Renew the scholarship. That is better than hanging on to the player, if he is not going to play.
Both the School and the Player have the right to upgrade their situation. The good news is that most of the players were not going to get the minutes and turned out to be Division II or backup players. Except maybe Mathews, who left for personal family issues. He probably could have gone to another Division I school, but he opted to stay closer to home.
I would be more worried if our Better players were leaving, which they are not.

If you been following Sydney's post game comments all year, he has comment on the leadership issue all year. In many of the cases, his praise for them (even in losses) was there.... he pointed how the leadership was developing. He has been pointing out that growing team leaders was an important facet of the growth of this team. However, the last game was as horrific as the press conference was. While Sydney did not name names, if was clear that he referred to Marcus as letting us down. Probably the Wrong Way to handle it, but certainly not the way Sydney was handling it all year.
Matter of Fact, Sydney has been "Overly " respectful all year to our opponents, and "overly" praising the players on our team searching for positives. The press Conference was bad, but in some respects, Sydney's change in tune, maybe is what is needed to help things sink in. I thought Marcus handled it well.
